Balto Burrowell - Gnome Illusionist

My first posted mini. My photography is obviously in need of some serious improvement but I just got the camera yesterday. I also should photograph before I seal as even the matte sealer is looking very shiney in this picture, but these are for gameplay. I restarted three times on ol' Balto here before I found colors I liked. Suggestions for improvement for photography or painting would be much appreciated.

Nice color scheme. You need to add more highlights. Overall, I can spot two shades on the orange and two on the grey. The face, hair and boots, all seem to be painted in only one color. the additional highlights would give more depht to your paintjob.

From what I can see this is pretty nice. Your painting is very neat. The boots and bag look a little flat, as does the hand that's pointing. Spend a little more time to get some highlight/shade in there. As for the gloss, Testor's Dullcote gives a very matte finish--since you're gaming with these figures, you can use the normal spray and then matte it out with the dullcote.

I think you have a good foundation of skills. You comment on the matte sealer, and in result I recommend a thin coat of the Testor's Dullcoat; it seems to be the most popular sealer these days. I haven't had any gloss problems since I started sealing all my figures with it. One thing that jumps out that might be nice is a small amount of "blacklining" on the figure. (perhaps I should call it "brownlining") I think a very thin brown line inbetween the hand and the sleeve would help bring it out a bit. Also, you might want to start with a darker foundation color for the silver/metal parts -- the bright metal is rather glaring. I think the orange turned out quite well. For some reason, it looks like he's standing on a slab of green jello.
