Imperial Griffon
A project I always wanted to do is a revival of an old GW-illustration of Emperor Karl-Franz on his Griffon. Normally not a fan of most of John Blache´s works I nevertheless like this particular one so much I still endeavour to emulate it mini-wise. Doing some sketches, however, I got sidetracked and opted for a much more static pose for the griffon, giving it a (I think) quite regal look, befitting such a noble beast… As an aside, I then decided to convert not the Emperor himself, but a Hero of the Empire, giving me the opportunity to have another go at the aforementioned Emperor–on-Deathclaw-project in the (far) future. While sculpting the Griffon itself was great fun, I really hadn´t thought hard enough about one (or to be exact, two) things: those griffons have wings on them, don´t they? And as I hadn´t wasted a single thought about the griffon´s size in relation to his wings beforehand, I had robbed myself of the possibility of using readymade wings from another model… if anyone out there ever entertained the plan of sculpting wings, let me tell you: this is where the fun part ended ; tedious, repetetive work (two wings/two sides each/manymany feathers each side-you get my meaning) just doesn´t cut it for me… I am quite contend how it turned out, though, and perhaps, just perhaps I will do some feathered wings in the future…but not if I can help it. Colour-wise I plan to do the griffon in earthy browns and khakis, no fancy tigerstripes or the like, while the rider will receive some white and red liveries, at least this is the plan… ah, while talking about the plan, as the mini just begs for some foot soldiers to exhort onwards, I plan to do some halberdiers as well, but, well,… Now, i´m off, changing “the plan” into harsh reality! Happy painting to you all!
