My second diorama

Did this one for a couple we play D&D with. Hard to tell by the pictures, but the fire-mage and the elf are on removable bases. I got the idea for the forest scene from one of the articles here on CMON. I started with some foam board I got at Michael's. Cut it out to match the base and built up a skeleton from cork board. I cut out the places for the removable bases. Then I used some yard dirt/sand (very dry dirt out here in Riverside CA), wood glue, and water to paste/plaster terrain on the skeleton. Let that dry for a few days. Added the branches to make the tree trunks. I then made the "branches" for the diorama out of floral wire and green stuff. Then I added chunks of cork for the rocks and boulders. Primer'd black the whole thing, and then added model sand to paint as moss. Oh yeah, you can't see it on these pics, but I sculpted some "roots" peaking out from green stuff as well. I won't bore you with painting details as most of you are much more capable than I. The biggest problem I had with this was a mislabled can of varnish that claimed to be "satin finish". Unfortunately, it was glossier than most glosses and a lot of the texture detail on the trees, rocks, and moss got a little lost. Last but not least, varnished fern greens, painted, and then re-varnished for the pine-needles. I can't remember the name right now, but it is much finer than asparagus fern. Well, let me know what you guys think. I had a lot of fun working on this, and more fun seeing the look on my buddies' faces when I gave it to them.

The miniatures themselves are of tabletop quality from what I can tell, between a 4 and 5. You've been really clever and imaginative with the diorama setting, however, so much of the increase in my score reflects the time, thought, and effort put into the setting.
