Zagstruk and the Vulcha Boyz

Hey fellas!

Let me start this off with an apology - I realized just the other day that while I was keeping a W.I.P. of this project on my main blog site, I\'ve been forgetting to post it here!

There have been a lot of steps to this project so far - I will attempt to recap on some of them, but if you want a full front-to-back on the build so far, you can check here. There\'s also more pictures.

So. It\'s pretty much fact to anyone who has read the new ork codex that Zagstruk is damn near mandatory for ork armies now. His new rules are incredible. Power klaw feet that strike at initiative? Deep striking? Truly awesome. I obviously need some stormboyz, and a Zagstruk to lead them. I figured I might as well get started on a Vulcha squad before the new codex got released.

There\'s art of him in the dex, but I don\'t think I can link it here without crossing some lines, so I won\'t. Suffice to say, the artwork is awesome, and the basis for the model I\'m making.

I started by making the most obvious item in the art - Zagstruk\'s choppa:

zag1.jpg

zag2.jpg

Handle is from one of the fantasy ogres. I hacked off the blade and started replacing it with my own. It looks like there\'s a rokkit booster on the side of Zagstruk\'s sword, but that would be so fiddly and tiny I decided a simple cylinder would do for now. I also chopped a part off one of the ork shootas that had a gauge for the side opposite the boosta. Persumably it\'s a fuel gauge or altimiter. Assuming it works at all, which is a fairly big assumption given orks. I have to add those spiky bits to the back of the handle still.

During the course of working on this, I found myself in a conundrum as to what I would make his jetpack look like. Since he\'s Zagstruk and all, he\'s the biggest and most important stormboy, and as such should have a suitably enormous contraption on his back to hurtle him through the air. Still, it was one of the parts that the art clearly avoided, so I got to wondering for a while. Someone else over at The-Waaagh was working on a Zagstruk model a while back, and they were also wondering what sort of jetpack to give him. They posted this little line of dialogue:

I figured as the greatest and most revered of the stormboyz his jump pack would be the closest to a ballistic missile or something fired off of a Gargant.

Hah, fired off a garga-... hey, wait a minute.

neogant26.jpg

bombzoom.jpg

A.. a grot bomb? You know, I actually have a spare one of them. I got it busted-up... the grot pilot was damaged beyond recognition and some of the back fins were missing.

Hmmm.

It was pretty obvious what had to be done.

zag3.jpg

This patched-up grot bomb will be the exorbitantly large rokkit pack that Zagstrukk gets to sling across his back!

I actually did a bit of digging following this, and despite my best efforts I\'m going to have to do some sculpting on this one. I hacked the torso off the last spare nob body I had and started dremelling it all down to bare metal. Basically I just wanted to get something the approximate size and shape of an ork nob torso to sculpt over.

zag6.jpg

Not much to look at, until...

zag8.jpg

I sculpted a shirt onto the parts of him that I thought might be visible - the rest will be concealed by a flight harness and jacket. He also got a special slugga befitting of his rank as the toughest stormboy around.

Of course, one of the most important features on him was his commissar-esque hat, which I then endeavored to duplicate:

zag13.jpg

While the hat is certainly important, nothing is more vital to this character than \'Da Vulchas Klawz\', his power-klaw feet. The art suggested something taloned and mean looking, and I did a bit of digging through my bitz boxes. I came up with the perfect bit - Nazdreg\'s power klaw from 2nd edition. With a bit of cutting and shaping, it soon became a taloned power klaw foot!

zag16.jpg

\'Course, if you\'re going to have a fancy mechanical foot, you need equally fancy mechanical legs, so I assembled this little number for him:

zag26.jpg

It\'s in need of a bit of armor, particularly around the shin area. And more rivets. Always more rivets. Still, I\'m really happy with how the overall design of the leg has turned out. Thehe upper leg will be bulked up by the presence of tattered pants. I\'ll be sculpting it directly into the hip, I think. Also note that this is just a mock-up of where the leg will be!

I unfortunately only had one Nazdreg claw in my possession, which makes crafting a pair of killy feet a bit difficult. However, I\'ve been endeavoring to fix this oversight by organizing a trade where I can get my hands on more Nazdreg power klaws to turn into feet. They should actually be enroute to me in the mail right about now.

To kill the time while I wait, I decided I\'d start on the other leg and get the basic posture down.

zag28.jpg

zag30.jpg

left a bit of extra tubing down past the ankle so I had material to work with when I do get the bits.

Again, these are just mockups, but you get the idea of the pose I\'m going for. I\'ll probably shift his hips around as needed while I work on it.

I\'ve been deciding what I wanted to do for Zagstruk and how I imagined his base might work, but at this point, an actual model mock-up is the best approach, so here is a photo I thought might be a little fun:

zag27.jpg

You can never have enough guardsmen getting mauled.

Basically the pose he\'s in now, and the angle he\'s coming down at, means I can pose him vertically using a clear plastic tube like a flying base normally has (but longer). Then if I want to take some fun photos it\'s just a matter of setting him up next to a model he\'s in combat with, so it looks like he\'s plummeting into the melee.

I\'m going to delay a bit if I can, since I\'m waiting for the bitz to arrive. In the interim, I think I might work on his jetpack some; he could use stubby wings on it and some extra cabling and worky bitz, and I think I\'m going to use that plasticard plate I put on the back as a good spot to put a \'corrupted aquila\' of sorts, with an ork glyph between angular wings to symbolize the vulcha boyz. These guys are sort\'ve blood axes anyway, what with Zag almost being a commissar, so I think it\'d make decent enough sense.

What do you guys think so far? It\'s obviously still a work in progress, but most of my stuff is. :)

That is incredibly cool. Fantastic work, especially on the leg! :D Do you think you\'ll finish this one? ;)

looks amazing! How did you do the stitching on his jacket?

It\'s really simple, and two steps - the first one is just to spread a layer of greenstuff over what you\'re working on, and grab an xacto. Cut some straight lines into it where you want it to look patchy so you have the edges between the pieces of cloth that make up the shirt. Then, before it dried, I grabbed a toothpick and made matching depressions on either side of the edge that I had cut with the xacto - do this a dozen or so times, and let it dry. Then, once it\'s dry, mix up a little more greenstuff, roll it into very, very teeny tiny sausages, position in the depressions you\'ve made on the torso, and press. They flatten out into stitches. :)

every time i consider working on an ork model, you and tidco are my biggest sources of inspiration,(i say that as im working on an IG hellhound :wow: )
looking great as usual

James it looks like your going to hit another one out of the park.
Ihateyou. Ihateyou. Ihateyou :D

The only problem I have is that the space between the upper body and the finished leg doesn\'t look like it has enough room for the pelvis. Remember that fluff sez that a Ork is as tall as a Space Marine if they only would stop crouching. So I\'m thinking that you could stretch him out abit.
As looking at the head, something looks off. No ears, are you going to add some? Or and heres an idea  Add a belt/strap around/ to the cap. He wouldn\'t want it fling off in the middle of a jump, now would he?
number 2 Are you adding fins to the rocket, I see in your pics that there are pin holes in the side. I say go for it! A little control helps to keep the fungus beer down.
Well that M2C (for the moment), looks like I have another thread to watch.

defiantly keeping an eye on this. I have to agree with mud duck on the spacing for the right leg, the gap left looks far less than the space you have left for the pelvis on the left leg, it may be the camera angles but defiantly worth looking at.

This guy is gonna look great!

Anatomically right now it looks like he\'s got no stomach or pelvis done up yet so I\'ll echo the earlier sentiments of \"Make sure his torso is as long as it\'s supposed to be.\"

Impressive work. As ever, i\'ll be following this one.

As far as the rokkit pack goes, however:
Take the detonator button off! Since it isn\'t a bomb, it may as well look nice and pointy.
I\'m guessing you\'re going to add to the rear of it? It doesn\'t look complete right now.

I think the detonator button makes it more Orky, especially if you paint it with hazard stripes or something else to draw as much attention as possible to it. lol

Yeah, I have a few rocket exhaust parts from old Gundam toys that would fit perfectly, so they\'ll be handling that.

Well, tiny update on my Zagstruk. I got home today and felt impatient, as the nazdreg claws I\'m waiting for in the mail have yet to arrive. I sort\'ve wanted to still get something done on this project all the same, so I pulled the arm off my \'Ard Boy Nob and started sawing it down to size. Thanks to my efforts, he\'s got a proper pair of feet now. Photographed this in a bit of a different aspect ratio than my usual since I wanted to include the guardsman for reference; turning the camera 90 degrees worked best for shooting these. I probably won\'t do that again, as it\'s a pain to view compared to a normal horizontal image.

I think I\'m going to get working on the rokkit next until I work the nerve back up to get to sculpting this guy. I\'ve been looking at the torso a fair bit, but I think the current position of the legs in relation to where the waist is/will be is pretty solid. My opinion may change as he gets bulkier and a proper pelvis, but right now I don\'t want to make him too long.

Another tiny update today.

I\'m not going to lie, this project really lost speed when I found I had to seriously get to sculpting. There\'s nothing I dislike more, simply because I can almost never get things looking right. Still, my buddy Brian managed to get me off my ass and convinced me to give the jacket a(nother) try. I\'d made one previous to this, but it really looked... terrible, so I pulled it off, and tried again. That one came off too! Really not all that motivating when you can\'t get it right.

Anyway, I gave it one more try, ditching my usual greenstuff for brownstuff in the hopes that it might cure into something more adequate. I think it\'s.. alright. I only did half of the lower jacket so far, but I suppose I have an obligation to put pictures up periodically to prove that I am still alive.

zag36.jpg

zag37.jpg

zag38.jpg

Was just aiming to get the basic shape of the jacket down on this side. It\'ll get a couple extra things sculpted overtop, I think, so it looks a bit more like the forgeworld fighta-bomma pilot jacket... and then a harness for the jetpack gets sculpted over all of THAT. The hands have been removed so they don\'t get in the way while I work for now.

The area around the shoulder isn\'t really all that refined or complete. I left that mostly undone so I could sculpt a tattered upper sleeve around the arm later. Same goes for the back - there\'s going to be a / split in the back of the jacket so that it looks like it can flap open like that, and I\'ll probably put a belt going around the outside of the jacket as well.

Like I said, teensy update, but I figured I might as well. We\'ll see if I can be motivated into sculpting the other half any time soon - I\'m already feeling lazy again. :p

Yeah, same as the detail on the forgeworld fighta-bomma jacket, he\'ll have a fur collar.

It took some doing, but I got what might be the other half of the lower coat section made.

I must have put it on and pulled it off close to ten times before I gave up on it for the morning, but after lunch I figured I\'d give it another attempt and the first try was what you see now. I\'m not entirely sure I like the way it looks, as I think I botched some of the places I attempted to put creases in, but I\'m hoping these mistakes will be covered up by what follows - for example, the rokkit harness and the fur collar \'round the neck area. We\'ll see.

Anyway, pictures!

zag42.jpg

Next part is the upper jacket area, I think, just to thinly cover the metal over and then the sleeves and collar. I should probably be doing the pants first, as sculpting underneath the coat is going to be a pain, but... oh well.

I have a lot of pictures, considering not much has been done to the model, but I took the pictures primarily so I could later sketch over them and figure out how the harness might sit across his body. I feel like posting these up anyway, though.

I sculpted the top half of his jacket, but it\'s really poor work. I tried putting all sorts of creases and folds into it, but they didn\'t come out as I had anticipated. Fortunately, I imagine most of that won\'t show, as it will be covered by shoulder armor and the harness for the rokkit. He needs a furry collar and torn sleeves, still.

Speaking of the rokkit, I simply pinned the rocket onto his back for now so I could keep it in a consistent place for pictures. Beats balancing it on there, anyway. I\'m concerned it might be too big and sticking out too far, but I\'m hesitant to dremel down either zagstruk or it to get it to sit closer towards his body. What do you guys think? Does it stick out too far?

Thanks go to grey_death for posting this handy little sketch at dakkadakka.com. I started to put an icon on the back of the huge rokkit for Zagstruk and Da Vulcha Boyz - some cross between an ork skull and aquila - based on a concept he had for one of the shin guards.

zaglogo.jpg

I\'ll be doing the other half of it once this part dries, since I don\'t want to accidentally screw it up. I think it fits nicely, though.

I\'m actually not entirely sure what to do with the legs right now. If I don\'t think of anything particularly clever I guess I\'ll simply try sculpting torn trousers that go down to mid-thigh so I don\'t cover too much of the legs up. Shin armor is still very necessary, as the legs look too spindly right now, but hardly anything is actually complete on this model yet.
