For myself, I would have to say 8. MY brushes, paints, lighting, chair, and surroundings stay pretty consistent. I\'ve also done jobs that are good (for me) on poor minis, but totally messed up a good simple sculpt of another.

If I\'m in the right mood and am motivated, I take more time and am more focused, so I tend to do a better job. I also seem to do better work when I\'m doing it \"for fun\" than for anything else. My best stuff so far has been happy accidents. :D

time?

dear lord, number nine. if only i could find the time to paint.

getting adjusted to married life and owning a house and a 1.5hr commute to work in each direction is taking a toll on my ability to even get to a brush.

otherwise, i\'d have to say number 3. i hate poorly cast minis, as even minor bumps will end up showing up in any photos. its also a pet peeve of mine to clean up mould lines.

oh yeah, and skill like any of the top 10 c\'mon painters wouldn\'t hurt either. :innocent:

#1, 2 and 6 are not always necessary, but #7 is critical if it includes \"no distractions in time units of greater than fifteen minutes.\"

I\'m thinking that Edison\'s \"99% perspiration\" rule applies here too, and for mini painting that means TIME.

My best mini work requires inspiration, so I guess that falls into the \'right mindset\' point. I usually have the t.v. on in the background, rather than music, on the Space channel (sci-fi shows, mostly, for those that aren\'t familiar with it).
I buy new brushes once a month, whether I need them or not, so they\'re rarely a problem.
My paint collection grows with my brush collection, usually, so, also not paints.

But I think I need to add another option...
My best mini work requires...
someone else to do it for me that actually knows what they\'re doing. :bouncy:

Definitely #8 for me.
If I\'m in the right mindset, I can go back as many times necessary and paint / repaint until I\'m happy with the results.
Unfortunately I get bored very easily, so I rather paint something fast and move on to another one, which does not produce the results I would like.
Good poll!

5 is less important for me (but more important for my back :)), but all the rest are the perfect ingredients if I want to paint up an award-winning paintjob :D

Time, lighting, and a good design (both the mini and the color scheme). Music or a DVD can help.

I\'m not too difficult on paints; GWs are fine IMHO. A good brush tip can be essential for freehands, but my best brush is actually my oldest. It\'s all clogged up in paint where the brush hairs meet the metal part, but that keeps a perfect brush tip. Took months to get just right :p.

4, 5, 6, 7, 8. I cannot say that my talent/skill is good enough to warrant better quality tools, even though I do love my W&N7 brushes, I\'m almost too scared to use them.

However, no distractions and a proper mood are the most important to me. I detest distractions, and will often paint with headphones and number 6 in order to reduce distractions. I\'m easily irritated, and that affects number 8. I need to go into my own little world, completely shut off from everything else. Heck, that\'s how I study too.

Once again, Klute and I are of single mind...

I said \'single\' mind! Not \'simple\' mind....

And to paraphrase him with one of my own favourite sayings, a painted turd is still a painted turd.

I have always believed that sculpts have a limited potential to realise. Some sculpts wouldn\'t beat a six if God himself painted them, others are just so fantastic the \'average reasonable painter\' would have to work hard to score below a 6/7.

Hey don\'t worry too much about that, allan does all his work with GW, as does jeremy (french slayer winner this year). So i guess GW paints aren\'t all that evil :p

As for me I think right mood and mind set are essentiel, wich pairs up with having a sculpt I like.

Was it you that started that \"boring into art\" thread ages ago?
My entry, and the 3 others of the identical boring Space Marine that I have done so far (12 more to go if I can find them) won me a medal at a local show, so I think you can do a lot with a turd.
(in Alaska they make necklaces out of them, see below, but that\'s a different story)
