For zombies:
1. Trim flash.
2. Prime white or zenithal priming.
3. Wash in brown (Army Quickshade Strong) to add shadows.
4. Color in eyes with 005 Micron Red pen.
5. Paint skin grey or whatever color in thin coats (glazing).
6. Paint transparent clothing (eg. stockings, t-shirts) in VERY thin coats. (See CMON article: http://www.coolminiornot.com/articles/1128)
7. Pain clothing in thin coats (glazing).
8. Wash after steps 5-7 as necessary.
For survivors:
1. Learn Reaper Learn to Paint Kit 2: Beginning Skin and Cloth.
2. Use pics of previously painted Survivors as reference material.
I would use an entirely different painting method with the survivors, following the Reaper LTPK2: prime white, basecoat, shade, highlight. "Dirty and quick" is fine for evil minions, but personalities should stand out and be distinct. Consider rebasing them on clear acrylic bases. Once you get through LTPK2, you should be quite able to paint these miniatures.
See Reaper's The Craft for painting materials. At the least, you want a high quality paintbrush (eg. Winsor and Newton Series Round Size 1), DIY wet palette, two rinse jars, Master's Brush Soap). I understand Vallejo Air Model Silver is the least difficult metallic paint to work with. Matte medium is good to learn glazing, although you'll switch to water eventually.
