Yet another \"My first green\"

I had posted this on the \"works in progress\" thread, but being my first sculpt I would really like some feedback. ;)

After a few questions and some lurking around , here is my first green before I start to add some clothing/details:

defiance.jpg

About the pose: I wanted to do something more interesting than the usual \"girl with sword in hand\" type of miniature. She will likely have a buckler/shield on the raised arm, and the other one searching for a broken sword in the ground, as she tries to parry a final? blow from her opponent.

Comments and suggestions, good or bad are most welcome.

I like what you have done but you wanted some feedback so I will give you some.

The two leg portions seem to be out slightly. The shin is too short compared to the thigh (left leg.

The breasts seem to be californian type that defy gravity. I assume one the clothing is added they will look more realistic.

great work I love the little details like ankle bones. Keep us posted.

Thanks all for the comments. :)

@mistamick - Aye, figured a close-up of the booty was in order.

@Ogrebane - Hum... Seems I will have to remove the left foot and extend the leg maybe two more mm. I planned somekind of \"support\" for the breasts, but I\'ll try to apply some gravity to them anyway.

@Patrick - Thanks, she has an armature done using your method beneath the skin. ;)

I\'ll keep you guys posted of her progress. The face is done and looks better than I had hoped for a first, pictures asap.

Looks great, I especially like the back and the pose. I think the hips and outer thigh sections could be a bit wider, and the ankles and lower legs a bit thinner.

Agreed - lookin\' good :)

Be nice to have some wavy hair/clothing to fit with the dynamic pose too - are you gonna make the attacker and do a duel diorama?

Best thing about a project like this is when your mum catches you looking at porn you can say its research!

@quadrille - Noticed that too after some more rumaging trough my references. I\'ll take care of the meaty ankles when I extend the lower leg a bit.

@DaN - The plan is to make some very dynamic hair, as if she was just pushed into that position. I might get around to sculpt a beast to go along with her if she comes out decent.

@Gareth© - Hehe, true. I was just this morning improving my reference library. Found this nice site: http://www.fineart.sk/ An understanding gf/wife is also a bonus. ;)

Here is the current version.

The anatomy has been corrected in numerous places and the face sculpted.

It was surprisingly easier to do than expected, I wasn\'t planning my first attempt to look like a face, even less a feminine one.

As before, comments and sugestions, good or bad are most welcome!

You weren\'t planning on your first attempt to look like a face??

What WERE you planning on it looking like? An elbow?

Nice job! :)

BUT:
The eyes are huge (like manga eyes) and I don\'t think the mouth is particularly expressive- what sort of expression are you aiming for her to have?

The plan was to make it look like a female face, I was simply expecting it to turn out like some tar monster instead. :D

I still need to add the \"teeth\" to the mouth, the idea was to go for a \"clenched teeth\" look, but it seems it\'s not working. ;)

The eyes seem bigger in the picture than they really are, but I guess that making them a bit smaller wouldn\'t hurt.

Thanks

As regards your teeth idea - who are you going about it...?

Seems to me the best way would be to simply fill the mouth area with a squadge (technical term) of GS and smooth this into the right shape, then, when it is part-cured, simply press a line along the centre for the teeth...

Not sure if you wanna do vertical lines too, as that might spoil it...

A small update of the face.

It proved almost impossible to add \"teeth\" as the mouth opening is probably about 2/10mm, the point of a modelling knife is too big to sculpt inside it. :/

Sorry if it came out that way. I was truly amazed that it came out looking any good, it was probably just beginners luck tough, my next face is sure to turn into some mud monster or flesh golem. ;)

I\'ll try to explain how it was done, maybe it will be of help to other noobs like myself.

Note 1: I use vaseline to lubricate my fingers and tools (that sounds so wrong taken out of context).

Note 2: Probably over 90% of the sculpture, including the face was made using tools I \"sculpted\" out of GS. I can post a picture of them if anyone wants.

The rough face you see in the first picture of the thread was removed after a futile attempt to sculpt over it, it would end up way too big for the model.

That left a small blob of putty placed there in the armature/dolly phase.

Fresh putty was only placed on the \"face\" part of the head, no need to bulk up the rest for now and it avoids size creep, and having to push around putty that will simply be covered in hair. This putty was then roughly shaped into an oval using my fingers.

I pressed two holes into the putty to be the eye sockets and then pressed a sort of \"U\" shape between them to be the nose.

Looking at a couple of reference pics, I shaped the cheekbones by forming a small \"mound\" beneath each eye socket, shaping also the nose area by doing so. The forehead was next, leaving a brow over each eye and giving it a \"rounded square\" shape. The overall feel of the face must be that of an oval, with a pointy end forming the chin.

This was left to cure.

The eyes themselves were done by pressing a small ball of GS into each eye socket. The mouth was a small blob of GS placed +/- in the right place and divided into upper and lower lips. I also did some corrective surgery to the nose.

In a later stage I added some expression into the eyes by enlarging the brow and shaping it to a more menacing look, this also helped making them look smaller, as they were kinda big for the face.

I hope this helps someone. :)
