sooooo....

as a long time space wolves player i obviously bought wulfen when they were released.but now they are pretty much useless.

so i was wondering if ppl on tournys would mind if i field wulfen on 60mm bases as thunderwolf cavalry?

i like canis, but converting 5(or more) canis wolfborns...

not only the pose would be a bitch to change, also canis and the thunderwolf being 1 mini is a huge letdown.
and i wanna field wulfen again ^_^

Hey there HamHamLunchBox,

Most people in ordinary games will allow you to field a unit if you have something sort of approximating it. The key thing to remember is to use the same size base as the model you're trying to imitate. (Mainly to maintain the same statistical odds for template based weapons.)

Would some players have a problem with it? Yeah there are some diehard WYSIWYG players out there, but most of us non-competitive players don't mind. Changing it up and using units you normally wouldn't can actually be a nice change.

If you're going to play in a tournament though, I wouldn't even bother trying. Most tournaments are pretty strict about WYSIWYG rules if they're distributing prizes.

Comparing the two models now though....I really wouldn't suggest it. You could mod them into thunderwolf cavalry by using some of the old dire wolves from Vampire Counts WFB and having the Wulfen sit atop them. Or an interesting twist on it might be putting wulfen on marine bikes and calling that thunderwolf cavalry.

I mean a lot of players wouldn't mind once or twice, but I think you might want to try and substitute them as something else. Maybe they'd be great Space Wolf Scouts?

another cool thing is that i can go crazy with the bases.

its a "marine" on a huuuuge base ^^

Most people I've talked to are ok with it, so long as you put two wulfen on a base. This allows it to represent both the extra wound and extra toughness. Bonus points if the base and wulfen are such that they are roughly the same height as a mounted marine would be.

That even counts in tournaments here. You just have to have enough rocks on the base to keep the height up.

How many have you got? There's always the option of including them in Grey Hunter squads. An extra d6 attacks would add considerable weight to a unit especially now GH come with two cc weapons and a bolter as standard. Put a Wolf Guard guy in each squad too and you can make a pretty hefty troops based army.

Just as a small point of contention......why 60mm bases? Are you sure those are legal? Thunderwolf cavalry are cavalry type and therefore in theory should be put on a cavalry base. Canis Wolfborn's thunderwolf is an exceptionally large example of its species and thus mounted on a monstrous creature base. I know its a bit beardy but it does make a difference. Imagine a unit of terminators or tactical marines with 60mm base....it'd be terrible. A pie plate would only hit one model at a time (a lucky scatter not withstanding). I wouldnt mind in a friendly match but in a tounament there'd be questions asked.

Yeah, I agree that the wolf cavalry should be on 40mm bases, being cavalry.
Maybe you could just get a bunch of cheap wolves from ebay (goblin cavalry/old direwolves or such), and have both a wolf and a wolfen on one 40mm base. Thus, you have wolves on the bases (so no one can bother you), and the wolven don't seem so lost on big bases.
My 2 €cents

Another idea,

You could modify them and give them heavy weapons to have them represent a Long Fang unit. (I think that's the squad?)

You know, long in the fang looking like part wolves? Could give your heavy weapon teams a more bestial theme. I don't know, maybe it's a lame idea.

The modern cavalry bases are essentially the old horse bases with rounded ends.

Yeah, my problem with that was just that, while (for example) SM Scout Bikes have the longish bases, some cavalry models (I'm thinking DCoK Riders, though they are ForgeWorld products) come on 40 mm round bases. GW might (but of course never will) give us some clear-cut base-size guideline...

EDIT: Also, depending on how many Wulfen models you have... isn't there a trait called "Mark of the Wulfen" for SW characters and/or Wolf Guard? Might be useful for that, at least.

I have a sorta related question, again ( i posted a question yesterday that i may have been able to answer myself with the codex) i dont have a codex for my army, so i dont know if it covers this: I put a runtherd on a 40mm base for my Orks, i wanted to be able to add a little flock and some stones to the base. Is it no longer legal because its not on a small base like the one it came with? its only one size bigger (the base) which i figured would be ok since of the squig that sorta leans over the smaller bases, but now i'm not sure.

to hamham I think you would be albe to use the base when not in a torny but other wise I think some people would say ur breaking the rules or somthing like that
