Does anyone have an opinion on Grenidier/Mirlton miniatures?

I\'m thinking of getting some of these tiger rider barbarians to replace marauder horsemen in my chaos army

http://www.mirliton.it/product_info.php?pName=connhal&cName=fantasy-2528mm-barbarians

Are they worth it? Are they good sculpts? Are they a smiilar scale to GW? I don\'t have any to look at in person so i\'m unsure...??????

Yes, they are totally worth it.

Lots of them, like the barbarian riding the tiger, were done by master sculpter Mark Copplestone.

They were all done by Grenadier years ago, and Mirilton bought the molds and are re-releasing them.

Scale wize, they are maybe just a smidge smaller than GW latest stuff, but they all fit fine. I have a few (including the tiger riding one) I\'d be glad to snap a pic or two comparing scale if you\'d need. Just let me know.

I have a ton (well....pounds anyway) of old grenidier stuff. I\'m so happy to see them re-cast. Some of them aren\'t that great but back before slot base figs they were the be-all-end-all of fantasy minis.

Neat, I had no idea Grenadier had been picked up by somebody. I see they have that praying paladin I always wanted - looks like time to place an order. :)

Did you sign up for the mini exchange? If I get you we\'ll see :D

I have an old grenadier mad scientist set if anyone wants it for cheap.
But Mirliton, ooh man...
Grenadier made such good miniatures.

Oh wow, that praying paladin is so nice looking. i really love these old miniatures. I wish i had gotten into miniatures back when ral partha/graniader was going strong.

I guess I\'ll have to buck the trend emerging on this thread and say that for the most part Grenadier were always pretty poor in my eyes. Comparing them to the standard of stuff available from manufacturers nowardays hasn\'t helped them out at all either. Most of them look pretty amatuerish in some way or other in comparison.

That\'s not to say there weren\'t one or two minis that have done OK at standing up to the test of time, but I\'m not rushing out to get hold of any recast ones.

I think the reminiscence factor plays a big part in their lasting appeal and overrides the quality, or lack of in a lot of cases.

Like I said in my 1st response, some of figs that were not very good, but for the time they were great.

Nothing, including painting compares to what we have now. But then, that was the stone age of fantasy miniatures. Once GW started producing things ral partha/grenidier had to really work to keep up. Obviously they didn\'t.

They are part of the history of this hobby, tho. In a way a big part and they weren\'t all that bad. I see stuff now that are about the same. The things they had outside of grenidier were....full on crap. Everything is relative.

While it\'s true that sculpting techniques and materials have advanced a lot, I think people like a lot of the older stuff because there was sometimes a different style or aesthetic back then. Less chunky, smaller minis and often a lot of humour that is lacking in eg. new GW releases (older GW stuff is often very funny, even some Space Marines!). And there were a lot of \"straight\" fantasy minis too, the classic Tolkein/medieval types like knight, ranger, wizard etc which can sometimes be a little scarce in our age of steampunk, genre-fusion and self-conscious irony.

Meh, you sound like me every time somebody drools over the next/newest Rackham piece. They drool, I yawn. lol Diff\'rent strokes and all that.

Plus, as NSA said, I truly believe that the older sculpts tend to have a lot more character, even if they aren\'t \'technically\' as well done.

I am also glad to see someone picked up the old Grenadier minis though I was never a really big fan of their stuff, often finding them a distant 3rd to old Ral Partha and Citadel.

On second thought perhaps tied for 3rd with old RAFM.

I do have several box sets of Grenadier in my collection though partly for nostalgia and partly because every now and then they did something very right, like their old goblin war giant and their \'giant of the month\' collection.
