Wrath of the Tomb Kings, Casket of Souls display model

This will be my first fantasy thread ever, I've painted some fantasy when I was younger but it's always been 40k that intrigued me the most.

So for the sake of trying something different for a painting comp at a Danish forum I opted for a fantasy entry to venture a bit out of my safe zone and really try and give this model 110% to test my own abilities.

The model I chose is the Casket of Souls as it is an awesome model and it presented me with an opportunity to try out a spiderweb technique that I've been wanting to do for a long time now.

I know it's supposed to rise from the sand on a heap of skulls, bu I don't really care, I really wanted to capture the ancient tomb feel and thus the plan is to cover it in spiderwebs en masse :D

The plinth is around 50mm in diameter as that is the maximum size allowed for the competition.

On to the pics:

And a spider as someone had to make all the messy spiderwebs to come

And some progression on the actual painting. I'm keeping the tones very earthy and am trying to tone town the skulls as to not steal away too much attention but in the same manner still be visible.

That's it for now, the deadline is July 11th, but I'll be going on holiday on the 29th of June so that'll be my personal deadline.

C&c is much appreciated :)

Lovely work on the tones! Using pigments I'd be guessing? I'd personally be saying that I'm missing some backbones, hips and all that extra bones stuff that really makes up a pile of skeletons. But this is fine too.

You could as well get more variation in perhaps, just an idea, it might be too distracting and you really want to blend them in. Like this.

I'll be watching this.

Thanks and yes I've played around with some pigments :) And I see what you mean about the lack of hips and bones but I wanted it to be subtle and not only skellies which hopefully will work in my favour once the webs are in place. After the pigments I might need to define some of the skellies a bit more but I'll have to wait and see about that till I get the other details painted :)

Ohhh looking good, what is the best way to get those thin strands of glue looking like cobwebs then?

It's actually a laquer, a sort of crakcle medium, here's the tutorial for it on massivevoodoo :) http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.dk/2011/12/tutorial-realistic-spiderwebs.html

It's so much fun playing around with but it does require an airbrush, I bought the crackle medium through www.forgedmonkey.com and it's well worth the money :)

The plinth is actually an old deodorant lid, and has proved to be my biggest mistake on this project as it's made of a soft plastic that very few things can stick properly to.... So I had to coat it in superglue, then vallejo plastic putty and sand it smooth. For future projects I'll either use wooden or resin plinths as this was a small nightmare to do, and I'm currently considering casting some plinths myself as well :)

Here's the next update.

The black part of the plinth still isn't smooth enough and will need another layer of filler and more sanding, but the solid coat of black made it more easy for me to see the surface clearly.

Awesome look mate! I ordered the cobweb stuff unfortunately I don't think it'll make it here in time for the competition I needed it for!

Awww you've webbed it already. The webs are looking fantastic though, but I was going to comment that the copper/gold could use a little dust/crackling, it looked too clean. Ah well. The cobwebs cover it up mostly, so it's fine mostly. It's not the center for attention of the piece anyway.

Looking forward to see what you do with the angry dead guy!

That webbing is looking ace on the base. I will keep an eye on this one.
Thanks :)

Yeah I know, but I figured it wouldn't be visible so I just went along with it, and besides I did have a pretty tight deadline for this piece so I needed to move on to finish it :)

Very Indiana Jones. Coming along nicely.
Thanks, it was totally unintentional but a I take it as a big compliment :D

The piece is done, and here's the pictures :D

Hope you all like it, I'd love to have more time to work on this, but it was nice to complete it so I can move on with other projects.
