Hi Guys and Gals,

This is a model i started yesterday, im a new/rookie painter with a 1/2 year experiance so far. I use vallejo game colour.

I have only painted orcs and goblins up until now, so this is a first for me in 2 ways.. a first with NMM, and a first painting something thats not green :D

So my problem is this, the model looks flat still, not enough \"shine\", i used vallejo plague brown as the base, then used gold yellow, then gold yellow with white, then sparingly, white. I shaded using parasite brown.

I havent picked out any of the details as of yet (rivits, straps), because im struggling to get this to look like gold.

Soo, question is.. have you got any tips for me to make it more believable gold?

Thanks in advance,

wilks.

you need more contrast between the hichest and lowest colours, and also think about adding some green to it.

i`d say take a look in the articles section and theres lots of ideas around.

Wow - nice. Shame it wasn\'t in the reduced offer recently or I\'d probably have got it myself.

NMM is a bitch - especially coloured NMM (ie. Gold, copper, bronze, etc etc)

I\'d say - along with tutorials, etc - try and have something gold coloured to hand to try and see how the light hits it - especially if you can get something a similar shape to the part you\'re painting (Or that you can bend that way)

wow, that\'s a nice model, i\'m going through the same myself with GW\'s celestine, and agree with the other guys, you need a darker contrast and have to bring it up to a pure white. it the armour faces down then it,s darker and if if faces up then white, the base colour is awesome so just work with some washes. goodluck

Thanks for your comments so far guys, i was working on the robes today while waiting for some feedback :)

I\'ll correct the gold armour and finish the robes (painting them a dark red) and post a pic tommorrow.

Very quickly whipped this up for you. It\'s by no means perfect, but should give a better idea of the more extreme contrast you should be going for, and how you should emphasise the light source\'s angle more in your highlights.

Starting gold NMM from plague brown was the mistake.
Gold is a lot darker than we think it is, and you should have started from a bestial brown base (I sometimes start even from scortched brown), and move up to white.

You need to contrast more the lighter parts from the darker ones.

First off:
Try to find a light source. Usually it is the sun, but what differs is the angle. You can have it zenithal (straight on top) or croocked from a side (which is more realistic). Say you decide to go top-left... ok, highlight all the left, and leave a darker tone to the right.

Second:
Look at all the different parts of the armour.
Each piece of armour has a different shape, and each shape reflects light in a different way. Take your time, and deal with each part once at a time. It\'s time consuming, but it will be the only way to do it.

Third:
rule of thumb for metallics: unlike matte colors, metallics always reflect pure white (since metallics have the ability to reflect light as a whole, and not just parts of it). Usually the shadows are black, or, anyhow, as dark as you can get them to be.

So, what can you do to improve the mini?
Darken a lot more (I mean, really a lot) the parts that are away from the light, and paint pure white the parts that reflect the light.

In the article section there are a lot of articles on NMM you can use as reference.

cheers

yeh i did a nmm model recently and it looked good and all so i decided to finish it up , anyway turns out i should have shaded it more than leaving the darkest colour as codex grey. because i\'ve noticed it looks \"pasty\" and pale, and theres not enough contrast to make the highlights obvious

Hey,

Still very much a WIP, ive darkened the gold and lightened the highlights.

The shoulder chipped on me, which is why the bottom looks white, i have to redo that whole piece.

The robes i would like feedback on, as well as you think the gold is an improvement or not?

Ive started the sword, but its by no means anywhere near finished! as you can see :p

Thanks for the continuing feedback! Be as harsh as you like ;)

i am by no means an expert on nmm so im not much help in that department but i think u need to lessen the areas of extreme light, darkening the overall look but making the gold shine with the very extreme highlights

as far as the robes go, i think they look awsome, infact i\'d love to know how u did them :D

The red is spot on. As for the NMM, I think you need to event he transition more. What I mean is that you currently apppear to have more highlight than shadow, and the transition is a bit harsh. You need to get that happy medium color glazed in there to smooth it out. Aslo you could use a \"hotspot\" highlight or two. These are areas of extreme highlight characterized as reflected light. the center of the light spot on the should for example could use one. For the shoulder guard itself pull your dark lowlight all the way to the top and use your highlight as edging along the top line of the guard.

Looking really good so far. It\'s great to see people try new things and have people help out. I\'m still working on learning nmm myself, but I figured I\'d toss a link out to a tutorial for magmatrax, if you haven\'t seen it.

And a more in-depth nmm thread by the same painter--has a great image there to illustrate the idea.

Thanks Dan. Been lurking for awhile, and just figured it was time to come out o hiding. Seeing someone with one of the same issues that I have, I thought it\'d be nice to share what I\'ve found on the subject.

I have some minis I\'ve been wanting to get up here for critique for awhile so guess it\'s time to do so. ::Goes to dig out the camera:: :D

Aye - getting there :)

I would also add a VERY thin highlight along the centre line of the sword, along the edge, and some almost pure white spots along the top edge in the direction you want the light to fall.
