WIP NMM Chainmail, Help?!?

Does anyone have any advice for NMM chainmail? Better yet would be examples.

I want to have a nice shiny effect. I have started on the arm chainmail. I am treating the whole arm as one single cylinder. Is this the right way to go? I didn\'t want to try and do each link with it\'s own shadow/highlight pattern.

Thanks for your thoughts and sorry for WIP pic quality I know its dark.

By the way how do I get my pic to appear in the post with no link? Oops sorry this should be in the WIP section...

Click on the little picture with an arrow just under the font size when you make a post.

Or just type

First off - lemme say: I REALLY like the skin and hair on that dwarf! :)

As for NMMing chain...! :p
Sounds a right pain in the gluteus maximus lol

Hmm... If your fella\'s beard wasn\'t shaded with blues I\'dv suggested giving the chain a blue wash and drybrushing the highlights on (Downward strokes only to pick up the toppermost edges)

I\'m not really sure now though. Maybe you could try a different coloured wash/glaze and see how that goes?

I think what helps is to paint a light grey (or whatever colour you\'re using) over the higher areas fading to a darker colour in the darker area, then picking out each link with white - don\'t worry about all the shadowing etc., it looks on your photo as if you have a couple of links under his underarm already glinting :D

This technique helps to get the definition and shiny look which helps with NMM, I think; contrast is as important as smooth blending and careful light direction. Here is my (only) attempt at NMM chainmail to show you what I mean about picking all the links out:

I\'m sure there are much better examples of NMM chainmail throughout the site, however - search around, I always find that looking at a well done piece helps with my own technique when painting NMM.
