I want to buy some of these brushes but was wondering what sizes are the norm for miniature painters and the most useful? What sizes do you use?

Also, where is the best deal to buy these no good art shops sell them here

I use a couple of 1\'s, a couple of 0\'s and a 00. I picked up a 000, but I think I\'ve only used it once since the others work just fine, even for detail work.

Usually buy them from Dick Blick:

I know some people have said that the quality of W&N have gone down over the past couple of years or so, but I guess I\'ve had pretty good luck with the ones I\'ve bought. I take good care of them and they\'re still going strong after almost two years of use.

The one thing that puts me off buying brushes online is not being able to look and test the points.

It might be more beneficial to contact someone in the hobby in the UK to select the brushes for you. That way you can ensure better selection of points and get a \"buddy\" system worked out.

DR\'s got a good idea there. All the brushes I\'ve ordered from Dick Blick (a couple 000, 0, 1 and 2 brushes) have all been keepers but it\'s definitely nice to check them out before ordering.

The best part about ordering from Dick Blick is that they\'re dirt cheap, so you can get 2-3 of the size you want and you\'re pretty much guaranteed to get some fantastic brushes on the cheap. Even if you get a bad one, you can probably send it back or get a replacement and you\'re still probably saving money.

Good luck with the brushes, I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. So much better than $5 Citadel brushes lol

There are better (more consistent, sometime better quality) brushes available, often for less.

This is very individual. Some people paint entire minis with one or two 000s while others will paint as much as possible with larger brushes (0-2, even larger for some things) switching to smaller brushes for detail work only.

The W&N Series 7 brushes are very expensive but the ones in Hinton\'s link (DickBlick) are much cheaper than the normal price so they might be worth buying after all.

If you don\'t yet know what size brushes to use I would guess that you are a beginner and high quality brushes won\'t make much difference until you are more experienced.

TBH, I find Games Workshop\'s Citadel brushes are fine for most of the work I do.

I mainly use Size 2, Size 1, Size 0 and size 00 plus an assortment of other odd brushes like Citadel \"small drybrush\" which is a bit overpriced for what it is but has a nice shape to it.

You will definitely need a Size 1, Size 2 and Size 0.

And they would ship to New Zealand?

The Help section says:

On any air shipments, and on all orders shipped outside the 48 contiguous states, or to APO/FPO addresses, there may be additional freight charges on some items. You will be notified prior to shipment.

I\'ve actually found Dick Blick\'s mail order brushes to be better than their retail stores. And if you have any issues their customer service is fantastic.

The Daler - Rowney Aquafine brush has been my choice lately. They last long and are perfect for doing any type of detail.

At the moment i am using a W&N special value sable brush. These come in at £3 for a size 1, 2/ and another i cant remember. They are cheap, but have lasted me a while and show no signs of splitting, fish hooking or any of the other problems that affect some brushes. These are worth buying just to try and dont cost a fortune.

Alex

(make sure you get sable though)

Just to clarify, I use a 1 or 2 for the vast majority of my work as well. The 0 gets a bit of work, and the 000 are much smaller than I had expected. They rarely get used at all really.

Even a \"competition\" piece like my Ork Prospektor (Gold in 40k Single this summer) was done with 1 or 2 brushes for the most part. Just a tiny bit of the smaller scratches/weathering were done with a 0 brush on him. These brushes allow you to work pretty quickly, and their super fine tips still allow most detail work without switching to a smaller brush. I really have a hard time going back to smaller or cheaper brushes after using some really good 1s and 2s.

Thanks for the responses been very helpful! Just to clarify something. The \"Winsor & Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Pointed Round\" are preferred rather than the \" Winsor & Newton Kolinsky Miniature Brushes Series 7\" for miniature painting, yes?

I prefer the regular rounds over the \"miniature\" series personally. The \"miniatures\" have a much shorter barrel, thereby holding less paint; I\'m a fan of dipping once and getting a lot of paint on the miniature rather than constantly re-wetting my tip.

Yep, the Miniature brushes are probably a lot stubbier than you\'re used to. I prefer the long bristles myself.

I use either a 0 or 1 for basecoats (depending on the size of the mini). I use a 2/0 for small details and a 3/0 for super small details.

And remember that brush sizes don\'t follow a rigerous standard. One company\'s size 0 may match a different company\'s size 2 and a third\'s size 3/0.
