So we had an great game of Zombicide tonight, even though we completely wiped on the mission. Mid way through the game, we had a situation where there was no avoiding it and someone was going to die. Each of the players who was at risk of dying had a reason as to why they should be the one to live. I felt they both had legitimate strategies and each of them were digging their heels in on not being the one to take the fall. In the end when it was clear neither was going to budge, and it was suggested they just perform a series of opposed rolls to determine how the bites hit. As I said, in the end we all died, but the game stalled for a bit of time while the situation was being hashed out, so it made me wonder... In your games, how do you decide who lives and who dies?

We usually talk it over as a group. Havent had a situation yet where someone opposed taking one for the team if it meant a shot at beating the mission.

It's come up a few times. Usually someone takes it as a chance to "opt out" and refill refreshments, stretch, go have a cigarette(no smoking in my house), etc. Only twice we've had to make a decision and the best way was just to go random. Each rolled two die and the highest total "dodged" the attack.

Yeah this was the first time we really had a stand off debate about the best course of action. In the end we had them make opposed dice rolls, but no one was really happy with the resolution. In the end, I don't think either strategy would have saved us from the predicament we were in.

This does come up a lot, so having a plan in place for your group is key to having a smooth game (or games!). Every time it's happened when I play, we decide as a group who takes the hit, based on who's already wounded, who has what gear, and what the objectives are. Never had a problem.

So far, we've only had 3 casualties in our games at all- and only one in this situation... I volunteered to die, as it was due to an extra activation, and my comrade in arms hadn't taken his turn yet that round.

In other games with my group, we look for volunteers- then move to the random roll if required.

We tend to use Munchkin's "Run Away" roll to do it- a roll of a 5 or 6 runs away, less doesn't; add any move action, slippery/low profile type skills, or speed bonuses as +1 to your die rolls.

For our group, if someone needs to take a wound, we generally even them out if we can to keep everyone in the game.

However, if it comes down to an inevitable death from taking the wound, we usually go with whoever failed the most - i.e. you activated the Aargh! Zombie whilst searching, you ran into the area preventing someone else from using their weapon, you rolled the most failed to-hits at the on-rushing horde... whoever was the biggest Biff really. For us it seems to be the most cinematic solution...

Whenever I've ever had an instance where one person can survive while one will die, it's generally dependent on who can contribute more to completing the missionn.
