What resin do most people use for casting-is there an excepted norm? Im looking to cast small pieces without too much detail, using silicone rubber moulds.

Im looking for somthing I can get easily within the UK (mail order is fine) at a reasonable price.

Two most common casting resins are Alumalite and Poracast.
Alumalite can be found in any well stocked hobby stores or art supplies store.
Problems is that unless you buy in bulk a starter set will cost aprox $30-$50

People are just giving you brand names which is little use initially. You first need to know a bit about types of resin.

I'd use a rapid cure 2-part polyurethane. Steer clear of polyester. Epoxy for clear-cast pieces. Use Tiranti, Sylmasta or Mouldlife for larger quantities.

Buy a suitable mask. Polyurethane gives off isocyanate fumes which are nasty and can lead to some quite vicious allegic reactions once you finally become sensitive to the stuff.

But where can i learn abut resin type and uses ?
Mostly you get this from picking up info here and there. As already listed the companies that sell casting products tend to have info on the different resins they sell and their relative suitability. Here's another one to look at:
Douglas & Sturgess.
