What Primer?

What primer do you guys use? I currently am using GW's white primer and it works great but its a bit expensive at 18 dollars a can. Just wondering if there is a cheaper alternative spray you would recommend? or better yet a primer for the airbrush?

I paint my thumb.
I've tried many things, but I've gone back to GW white, 18$ plus a 1 hour ride to get it... quality costs :(
I also have armoury's black; it's good, a bit thicker and grainier tough, half the price but I dunno where you can get that.
There's an article on clear primer out there, I sometime use it for very small and fiddly piece, works well but there is no grain so basecoating is a bit harder.

primer or undercoat? gw don't do primer, which is chemically different and helps stick paint to the model. i use car primer. it comes in grey, white and black, big cans, is smooth and cheap

GW is my choice for black. It's by far the smoothest and most reliable black spray I've found (though technically not "primer", I haven't had any problems with it rubbing off any more than any other spray). Yeah it's expensive, very expensive. To me though it's worth the extra money just knowing that I don't have to worry about the can going bad and ruining the figure. If I'm spending several hours cleaning and prepping a miniature it doesn't make much sense to me to spray any old junk on it :)

The new GW white is pretty smooth too, though I'll admit that since I primarily undercoat with black I'm not too familiar with many white sprays out there.

I mainly use three different "primers". Chaos black, Vallejo grey and Tamiya white. All three give very different results. The chaos black is smooth and makes the paint stick reasonable well. The vallejo grey is rougher and gives great adhesion. The Tamiya is really smooth but the paint doesn't stick to it very well. I've used skull white long time ago and wasn't very satisified but I'll probably try the new one out when the Tamiya runs out.

I also have a cheaper car primer for larger scales, works well for that.

I like Tamiya, unfortunately, I can't get any in my area right now so I am reduced to airbrushing primer on.

Car primer has been recommended by many and also Krylon primer.

Oh thank the muffin gods. I was worried about admitting I use the GW Black as well. I don't like using any of their other sprays, but the black has always worked consistently and well in my opinion. And even though it's expensive you do get a decent amount of it.

Ive used Krylon Ultra Flat Black Spray as a primer with excellent results. It's about $4 a can and goes a long way and has a nice finish to it. Ive also used Tamiya white and grey. I was just at Wal-mart and picked up a can of the Colorplace grey primer, flat black and flat white paint for $1.50 each to test out tonight. I have read on many forums that many people use them with good results.

I have always stuck with krylon white primer. But lately I've used vallejo white primer, sprayed with an airbrush.

I use the Colorplace stuff on tabletop quality armies. It works pretty good. It could be the heat here, but I have found the black spray to get chunky/grainy on occasions. The grey primer is very good. Flat white is decent too. Definitely worth the price.
