what is going on with the votes lately

I know that people have talked about this being sniped in the past but it hadn\'t happened to me until now. I have put my latest mini on with many angles (so people see all of the model), which I must say it is one of my best so far, but within 7 votes it drops stright down to 6.7! Now I have models on that have a better score than 6.7 and they are not that good.

Now most people will say \"give it time and it will be ok\", but I dont think it will as I have seen other models that I think are really good but the votes dont show it. It like people are jealous! I have also put another model for a friend of mine, and within 2 votes his model is at 5.5!! now that looks to me like one person gave it a good score and then someone else gave it a 1 or a 2.

I am sorry to go on but it is winding me up :flame:

Is there anything that can be done to stop these people from doing this? maybe stopping anon voting, only allow people who have accounts can vote.

There is no way (currently) of stopping sniping.

Voting on CMON is not \"fair\" and never will be.

Try not to let it get to you, yes its annoying, but in the end its just a toy soldier, its not worth getting upset over.

I know what you are saying trevor but when you spend a long time painting a model and you think to yourself \"thats really nice\" to then get 1 out of 10 by someone jealous!

here is the link to the model in question

please post your votes on here for me to see what people think of this model.

I\'m sorry, I\'m sorry, I\'m sorry, but this is a great example of \"IT\'S NOT SNIPING!\" I mean, the mini in question has had eight votes so far. Eight! Unless you started the mini at an overblown 10, it\'s totally in reason to have dropped to a 6.7 or so. I mean, there are so few votes right now, each vote counts a lot. And honestly, looking at the mini, I think it\'s around the six to seven range, meaning that the score is completely reasonable. Personally, I\'d be hard pressed to decide whether to give ya a 6 or a 7.

But hey, it\'s probably better in real life, it\'s just that with the compression, your score tends to drop, as your painting looks rougher as a result. Maybe cut out a view or two, and cut down on the excess background. :)

And your friends mini? could you supply a link? I mean, 5.5 after two is possible if you started it at a 5 or 6. I mean, you think that a person gave it a good score and then someone gave it a one or two? How do you know? Is it possible two people might have thought it was okay, but nothing special? Nahhh. :)

I have taken your advice Nelson, I have put another set of images on for this model (it is only 3 models and I have taken away the background more)

here is the new one http://www.coolminiornot.com/71110

I am doing this as an experiment before anyone says that I shouldn\'t have multiple posts of the same model to up my rating. I wll take one off when I see if these is a difference.

Thanks Nelson

Nice! The new pics are quite a lot better, much sharper and clearer, and you still get a nice feeling for a model. I think this should do better, although CMON is also a harsh mistress in that people tend to vote lower on big pics, since you can see the flaws more...

Of course, now you notice the shine from the gloss varnish more, but I\'ll shut up. :D Of course, an easy fix for that is to take the pic first, then spray the mini afterwards.

Here, just so you know that I know where you\'re coming from, here\'s an old pic of mine on CMON. Personally, at the time, I thought it deserved a lot more than 6.6, but hey, whadda ya gonna do? Practice practice practice, and I finally got the scores I wanted. :)

The newer picture is by far superior to the first. That said, there are still some things that could use some work and/or tweaking.

Photography wise, I can see a very harsh shadow behind the figure, as well as a glare, especially noticeable on the backpack in bottom shot. I suspect you\'re not diffusing your lights at all, which will help reduce this effect. Mayne at www.dragon-miniatures.com has a great photo setup tutorial that explains it far better than I could sum up in a post. :)

Red is a difficult colour to pull off, but that seems to be pretty nicely done in your images. However, the face doesn\'t stand out from the rest of the figure. Generally, making the face distinctive really helps make a figure impressive. On closer inspection, the face is actually done rather well -- it just gets lost in the red of the armour. I\'d recommend lightening the hair to help frame the face better against the armour.

I would also probably do away with the blue plasma gun and rune on the shoulder pad. You\'ve a lot of strong, warm colour with the red and bronze and a nice compliment with the green grenades, but the blue doesn\'t fit the colour scheme. I\'d suggest going for black or another subdued, neutral colour for those elements. Or you could take the complimentary colour up another notch and go with shades of green.

Finally, I\'d recommend washing the axe (and other metallic bits) with a mix of brown and black wash and then highlight the very edges with your brightest metallic colour to give all of it depth.

Hope that helps. :)

HURRAY!

i think i founf something i can help with!
when adding the flesh wash to the face...add some water to it so its not so bold.
if not the face resembles the gold areas.

As far as votes go you are very much in the hands of the first 20 odd voters, partly because of the sheep effect. As you get more and more votes, each one counts for less and less.

I left a comment, hope it helps.

Comments are the thing...

I like comments myself- they make it all worth it. You just need a sence of humor about it all and it helps you grow thicker skin. PS- listen to these folks (esp Trev, he is a PG(paintgod), serious- go see his gallery. The gallery gurus know know the score. I personally like your minis- you show great promise, and pics are almost as important.;)
The odd sniper enema hurts, but it just shows there is a jealous fool somewhere and you lit him up like a Xmas tree, don\'t let him do the same to you.:cool:lol

Don\'t worry about it. Everyone has different values of art and if they\'re not sophisticated enough to enjoy it for art and vote it down as a piece of metal and paint, or just for the (yes... some people think it\'s fun to work up other people) fun of sniping random people, then oh well for them. i for one, don\'t put up minis for rankings and back patting... i just put them up there for people to enjoy. Some do, others put down a 4 or 5 and move on to the next one. It\'s the way of life around here. You know how much time went into those minis, and you know how much they mean, and what rank you\'d give them. That\'s the pay off. But then again, i\'m in... what?... the bottom 100 or something like that, so whadda i know?!lol

I think that your scores are very fair for this figure. There are definitely several different aspects to look at - when judging wether a model is cool or not.

Picturewise - (I myself am no expert - taking pictures is definitely a struggle with me) - there seems to be a reddish hue to your pictures. Maybe looking at the settings on your white balance might help that a bit. Also as suggested earlier take your pictures before you varnish them and/or hit them with some kind of flat varnish such as testors dullcote. This will reduce the reflection off the miniature.

color - The browns really bleed into each other and being dark like the red the figure tends to look rather plain. The bone areas could definitely use some lighter highlights. Also as suggested earlier the inks are a bit thick and pooled up.

Paints - the paint looks thick in some areas as well. Thinning your paint to a cream thickness will help tremendously.

From a game ethos perspective - you have a space wolf figure representing the blood ravens - yet you have left all the space wolf runes and other space wolf themes times on the figure. This I could imagine could hurt your scores.

This figure is definitely above table top quality and I think that it is about right in where it is at.

You don\'t say ! Why, that\'s positively scandalous ! Scan-da-lous I say. And here I was thinking the snipers were a bunch of fundamentally good-intentioned people striving to bring averages down in order to make the odd high-quality mini stand out even more. Simply outrageous !

Seriously, thanks for a good laugh :). Your mini is at a deserved 6.5ish, mainly due to the photography. The others have said it all, listen to them - they know what they\'re talking about.

Sorry ironhorse..

You are listening to a bunch of seasoned, cynical old sods here. They have all been sniped so often they feel positively perforated:D

Your post also came at a time when there has just been a furious debate about the very issues you raise, so the regulars may be feeling a little battle weary...

However, you really can\'t expect any fair score until you have passed the 50 vote mark and then a clever little algorythm kicks in which removes \'extreme\' scores.

Your mini will average out somewhere between 6.5 and 7.5 I would predict. Not because it is bad, but because it is good. A 7 is a really respectable score on this site.

As U-4 said, extra points could be squeezed out with a better photo, or at least better lighting.

Honestly, I rated the figure a 6.

It\'s better than table standard, but the reds to me aren\'t working. The skintone I also find to be too dark, the pupil-less eye is distracting, and the figure itself seems glossy.

On the plus side, the lines are clean, I like the fur, and you\'ve paid good attention to the (abundance of) detail on that model - it has a lot of \'fiddly bits\'.

I went out and got myself a tube light instead of using the one I got at the moment (£4.99 from glenn web, in the UK. Buy one get one FREE at the moment!!!)

So I have taken a new picture of my friends model and uploaded it.

tell me if these pictures look better now please
