i have always been a huge fan of the citadel ink. chestnut, used it for everything now the problem is that they are ditching this line for the new line of washes. my problem being what will i replace it with. i am currently starting an

imperial fists space marine army and i was just going to mix yellow and chestnut together now that may be hard to do. so my question is as follows is there a comparable or better option out there now? vallejo , privateer ???

any help would be much appreciated:twisted:

I\'ve heard that Windsor & newton have an ink similar to chestnut but I\'m not sure ??? you\'d have to check.

and heres what i heard
I read a kind of review somewhere ill see if i can find it.....
ahhhh it was on dakkadakka
and here you go
New wash review kind of
and for the lazy folks heres a snapshot of the conversation
The local store here got a set of them in this week, and has had them out for people to use, and I gave them a go.
I have to say, they are COMPLETELY different than what the rumors have made them out to be, and I was quite impressed.
I was expecting them to be a \"magic wash\" version of the current inks, which sounded good, as I use the future floor wax with all of my current inks.
They are nothing at all like that.
Firstly, the washes themselves are \"viscous\", not thick like a paint, but when you put it on the model, it is visibly thick, not watery like the inks.
Secondly, the washes are very subdued. The first coat of black over white gave a very nice effect, while not completely covering the white basecoat like the ink would. The second coat made me say \"wow, 2 washes, and that is a perfectly shaded grey boltgun.
I believe they are designed so you can easily layer up colours using multiple coats of the washes.
The viscosity of the wash really allows you to control where you are applying it, unlike an ink, which just tends to flow into creases and down the model.

I only tried 3 of the colours. The black, red, and mud.
I can see the mud being people\'s new favorite.
Again, beautiful over white, but over the tallarn flesh, the skin was done in 1 coat of each and looked great.

I just thought I\'d see if anyone else had tried them, and what your thoughts were.

hope this helps.
i myself have picked up a lot of the disco\'d inks and paints but will also have to get some of these.
oh well
hobbies are supposed to be expensive right

Funny, I thought that\'s mostly what a magic wash did.

I\'ve seen the panic over chestnut ink elsewhere, and I don\'t completely get it. I\'ve only tried CDA chestnut myself, but there\'s also W&N nut brown (as mentioned) and Miniature Paints at the least. \'Course, CDA and MP could be difficult to get, depending on your location.

im really not sure about the worry myself as i use ink sparingly and only really for metallics.
maybe i havent found a way to use them on flesh as i mostly use a wash (thinned down paint) of course this maybe why im not a great painter yet lol???lol

chestnut is still around at this point, why not just load up? You could get 10 pots for about what you\'d spend on a regiment box and surely that\'d last you for a while no?

I have 2 new jars of it, but i never use it. I have a habit of buying heaps of the one thing, thinking ill use up heaps :)

If you\'re desperate for it, i could send you a jar lol.

Skin wash is pretty close to chestnut.

Sepia is a great colour too - useful for armour and ageing stuff. They do a brown as well.

But if you\'re that desperate for chestnut ink, just use Coaties....

P3 brown ink is really good, and a close match. I can best describe it as GW Brown Ink but with a bit more reddish tint. It\'s also very similar in consistency to the GW inks.
