What I'm Watching When Painting

Cake or Death?
I've got a mini DVD player (the portable ones with the screen) at my painting table, because I have to keep something going on to stay focused.

I'm watching Stargate SG-1 (season 3) right now, having started last week with season 1, and I'm three eps away from season 4.

It's a darn slow night here on CMON, so I'm gonna revive this topic: what are you watching while painting right now? (Or listening to - no music hating now...)

would never be able to watch dvd while painting, that would steal my focus for sure! im using a dvd record stuffed with various mp3s (obtained in a leagal way, of course...*cough*) so i dont have to change records.

my oh so cunning plan is to get some spanish learning audio cds though. just to maximize the time usage :)

I can't watch movies while I paint, got to keep my eyes focused on the miniatures.

But I am painting a bunch of Space Wolves right now and have Pandora Radio going. At the moment it's on my hair metal station. Got to love it when you have Cinderella and Poison blasting. Nothing screams "I'm a fierce Space Marine" like a good power ballad...

Gawd, I've been through so many Dvd's while trying to re-organise the place for comfortable painting.

Grateful that a Smallville season is so short. It's like a bad nightclub, going back every few months once self-convinced "it couldn't have been that bad surely", and being wrong. All that ropey dialogue, where the cast are given such insightful remarks in a mature perspective but preceded with "maybe" or closed with an "I guess". And the relationships, where undying love is the norm but folk are seemingly so devoid of trust that any misunderstanding leads to a rift. They certainly need someone to make an effort with consistency an all. :poop: Still, I'm sure a couple months after season 9 is out I'll have forgotten.

Finally relented and let Star Wars back into my life. Hadn't watched any since the cinema releases of the prequels. This time round, least I was prepared for their shoddyness. But damn, those commentaries. Sure hope Lucas doesn't need a bowel movement, would be damn uncomfortable with all his staff crawling up there. Though he's probably giving contortionism a go he loves himself so much, praising his skills during the originals in being about this and that, then praising himself during the prequels about things that seem counter to what made the originals so good.

Made myself feel better with a Marvel medly - X-men series, FF duo, Spidey trilogy, Daredevil and felt obligated to finish with Elektra to get value for money out of it. Now returned to Babylon5. Already ready for the second season, so I have a prettier Delenn to look forward to, a commander that can do more than raise some bushy eyebrows.

Top Gear at the moment. I only started watching it in the 10th season on BBC America so went out and picked up the older seasons. Great stuff. Needless to say, I have now started saving up for a Bugatti Veyron. I figure 30 or 40 years of living on canned soup and I'll be good to go with the deposit.

I also like watching either good historical films or comedies. Recently its been the 1969 Waterloo and 1968 War and Peace as well as Gettysburg.

Although when the miniatures need my undivided attention I am either listening to Pandora (anything from classical, metal, to classic rock), or audio lectures on a number of subjects from The Teaching Company.

It might sounds weird - but usually have a list of Red Dwarf episodes audio running on background when I'm time limited - as every episode is about 30 minutes, so for evening - I know after 4 of them is mostly time for bed and so :)

I try to watch the model I'm holding when I paint, I know it's difficult but I manage somehow.
When I'm going to paint in bulk without caring for quality that much I get my painting station and head out into the living room and turn on the TV to keep in the background.

I generally watch TV when i'm painting. To a degree I can understand why the TV licence for blind people is not much lower than for sighted people. I find I don't miss out on much as long as I can hear what is being said.
Occassionally I put DVDs on if there is nothing on TV. I've found that there are certain films that I can't paint and "watch" at the same time. The Matrix films are some as the fight scenes are just too distracting.. I end up with dried paint on the end of my brush as I get drawn into the scenes.

I've been watching (well, listening to) South Park and The Simpsons lately. For a while I tried some learn French cd's but found it a little distracting.

Either that or bebop radio through Winamp!

I paint at my desk with the computer in front of me so either TV/DVD/music are a permanent accompaniment to my painting. Video wise, anything that's well enough scripted to function as a radio play (all action explodey stuff is no good), The West Wing, Mad Men, Buffy/Angel/DollHouse/Firefly, Deadwood, Weeds are on a pretty steady rotation :) I think Breaking Bad season 1 is to be next purchase. BBC iPlayer for Radio 4 18:30 comedy shows. TV, generally Dave repeats of QI, etc. Music, WinAmp on shuffle of a 25,000 track playlist, occasionally looking up to rate tracks that catch my attention. I can't paint in silence though (or read, nap, etc) as street noise is too distracting. I sleep with the World Service on though, rarely is my life unaccompanied by background programming :D

Cheers, B.

Like BPI, my computer is at my workspace, so I can paint and watch/listen to TV shows and movies at the same time pretty well.

Being a member of Netflix means having a ton of movies and shows with Watch Instantly, so it's really a matter of whatever captures my interest at the moment; usually something that doesn't really require me to watch the screen all the time.

In the last month and a half, I've re-watched every episode of the Rockford Files, been through every available episode of Leverage, re-watched all of Red Dwarf several times over, watched The Gamers 2: Dorkness Rising, all of the episodes of the Dirty Jobs collections, the Tin Man mini-series and currently going through old episodes of Doctor Who (William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and John Pertwee).

No, I don't have a social life.

I like the TV when I am painting I rove from Dune to documentary. I have seen Dune so many times I do not need to watch and the doc's I listen to.
If I am sick tired of that I watch project runway or some other reality stick from the Philippines,UK or Au,it is cool to see the different cultures and how they handle stress.
I listen to music also and if I switch it up seems to be jazz, Italian classical or acoustical.

B5! My wife and I are watching it through from the beginning with our roommate. He is SO frustrated with Sinclair's acting.

I know what you mean. There has to be some kind of background noise so it's either music or TV in the background. Currently it's Farscape, the complete series. Other's I've watched recently while painting/molding are:
  • Frasier (seasons 1-6)
  • Ghost in the Shell (including the original movie through Stand Alone Complex: Second Gig)
  • House M.D.
  • Band of Brothers
  • Twelve Kingdoms (Anime)
  • Cowboy Bebop (Anime)
  • Outlaw Star (Anime)
  • Last Exile (Anime)
  • Elfen Lied (Depressing Anime)
  • Chrono Crusade (Surprise! more Anime)
  • Martian Successor Nadeisco (SP?)
  • Solty Rei (anime)
  • Ergo Proxy (Cyberpunk/Post Apocaylpse Anime)
  • Blade Runner
So umm....I like anime. Bah.:curse:
