What happens to GW minis after the photo?

This question is directed more at Tammy, but anyone who has info on the subject please fell free to chime in. I was curious as to what happens to all the GW minis that are painted and photographed for the codexes, White Dwarf, etc after they are photographed? Does GW store them somewhere? How long do they keep them? Are they ever auctioned off, or returned to the original painter? Are they ever given to a GW store or Rogue Trader for display purposes? Just wondering....thanks.

the modles painted by Eavy Metal are kept in the Studio, and used for box photography, white Dwarf and rulebooks. also, they get shown at Gw events like Games Day, and on a smaller scale, the open days and foreign grand tournaments. The models stay property of games workshop, no models will ever be \'returned\' to the painters, since they get paid a monthly wage to paint the models for gw. GW doesn\'t like the idea of selling of old tudio property, mainly because it would be more trouble than it\'s worth.

They are kept in the studio, and although you wouldn\'t think it, are constantly in use for photograhpy, or battle reports(yes, they use the cooly painted ones to actually play the games)

When a range gets obcelete due to re-release, the old models are archived, and in some cases, single models are given away as gifts to shareholders, business contacts, special guest of the studio(christopher lee and the other lotr actors/peter jackson spring to mind) and veteran employees.

In the end, the models that can truly not be found any more use for, are given to games development, to use and abuse for playtesting.

yeesh...

Excellent reply. I was going to say how that is getting the answer straight from the horses(cows) mouth, but there is no way of saying that and meaning flattery...

I had always wondered this too. Maybe I\'ll buy some stock in GW in hopes that someday I\'ll get a studio painted mini!!lol

look at the White Dwarf

A fairly recent volume dealth with boats and the high seas. One article in particular had a fleet of Orcs attacking a Dwarf stronghold defended by a Dwarf Ironside and a U-boat. Anyway, almost every dwarf model was a classic model, not a new release. I imagine they had been painted years ago, but they were brought up to add variety. The orcs, if I\'m not mistaken, were also old-ish.

I was actually glad to see some older models used. The older dwarfs just seemed so much happier.

ps. I had always assumed GW kept these models. When the end times come they will melt these models down and create an armory of swords and shields of fine pewter. They will cast arcane majiks on the weapons by rubbing them in doo doo and they will not use them to eat with. When the last battle comes, all GW staff will be laid waste because pewter is a soft metal and will not stop the right hand of fire.

pps. Sorry guys. I was channeling.

Thanks Tammy !!

I knew you would have the inside track on this. I kinda figured something along these lines, maybe secretly hoping GW donated them to an orphanage or something, LOL. Thanks again for your insight.

I always wondered what happened to them too. I thoughthtey just gave them to friends.

@spike: there\'s a big difference to the us dwarf, who uses minis done by their own staff(they don\'t employ full time painters, ie: no eavy metal team in the usa), and the uk one, who are responsible for ALL the product photography. lay out etc is then done by respective departments around the world.

Well, there are whole collections of old gw studio minis that end up in peoples homes, but those people are called Rick Priestley and such...;)

what a waste.....

 I would of thought that GW for the good of their \"little leaded souls\":innocent: , auction off the old minis and donate the money to a charity. Cleans out the closet and good PR for them. I guess I’m just a dreamer:~(

funny that, i suggested that myself on several occasions at staff meetings, but it\'s too much paperwork to truly be beneficial. plus, only outdated ranges aren\'t used any more, a lot of the times models are also just repainted to fit in with new col0our schemes....did that with the beastmen, minotaurs, dragon ogres, several marine chapters, eldar, chaos deamons, empire, orcs, etc etc etc.... the armies are in constant use, they take roughly 50 shots a day when it\'s busy, on the scanback camera(used for single shots), and the two big carnival ones(special wide lense contraptions for battle shots etc). Camera facilities in the UK studio would cost about £50.000 to replace if broken....I miss playing with the big toys :(
