What Brand of Primer?

I just ran out of Armory black (in the middle of priming, no less), so I need a new can.

However, I\'m not impressed with spending $10 on Armory, or $12+ on Citadel, when I could get the same stuff for $5 from Krylon or Duplicolor.

The problem that vexes me, fellow painters, is which brand, in your opinion, is worth the money, and won\'t fill in the details?

The other problem is that nobody seems to have black primer except for the hobby shops, which only carry Armory or Citadel, with the accompanying $10+ price tag, or enamel primers, and I don\'t use enamel paints.

I\'ve never had any trouble with Tamiya grey or white fine surface primer. It\'s sprays on very smooth. I\'m not too sure if this primer comes in black?

Hope this helps.

You could always go to Home Depot and pick up a can of Tremclad metal primer. It\'s much cheaper, but my personal experience with it wasn\'t great, so I went back to the more expensive stuff. It works, but it\'s not as good.

If you are in the US you should tell your hobby shop to stick it as they are over chargeing you big time :cussing: citadel SRP $10 and the armoury primer SRP is $5.99 I use to work at a shop and both of these prices are about the standard 40-50% mark up from what the shop pays for it. I am normaly all about supporting your local shop but at thouse prices I highly suggest trying some online dealers.

Primer review:

here

You say you don\'t use enamel primers, what do you think krylon or duplicolor are?

Chem lesson:
Paint is not primer. A good primer should bite into the lower layer and provide tooth for the next layer to adhere to.
Some primers are self leveling - avoid them, they are designed to fill in the scratches left in poor body work (read lost details for us.)
Other primers are \"sandable\". This generally means soft. Not a major deal especially considering we are painting soft metals.

Well, Canadians get hosed on GW prices over the Americans. MSRP is on average more than 65% more than it is in the US and our dollar is only 11% less, go figure. I\'m paying $15 for citadel primers.

Based on that link from Airhead I\'d say the Krylon General Purpose seems to be the best of the whites. And I like the proof positive that spray paint is not necessairly primer as many think.

Gee...All of those times I said Krylon white was better than that over priced GW stuff.

I have switched to paint on primer. It takes long to dry. But it is good too.

Yeah,
I\'ve been using Vallejo brush on for a bit now after a bad experience with Armory.

Since I\'m not into painting entire armies, it works out for me.

It seems I like using brush on more than a spray. Mostly because it gives more control over my work and is less weather dependant than a spray is.

Plus Vallejo have managed to produce a nice solid dependable primer.

Hmmm... seems I\'m more hooked than I thought.

I\'ve been very happy with Duplicolor. No problems with filling in details unless I\'ve made a mistake in priming technique.

That said, Tamiya is apparently becoming more popular among some competition level painters whose previous favorite was Floquil.

I\'ve been using spray on Vallejo matt, I don\'t know if you can get it in Canada... Any way it\'s about the same price as the other stuff you mention. (11 euros)
I\'ve ahd a couple of bad weather related experiences with it this summer, stuff went all powdery on me.

Up til taking a few painting classes at Gen Con this year., I always used Rustolem clean Metal Primer , It comes in white, red and black, the white is more of a very light grey and under $5 . It has never fail me but once and that was a can that was almost out and hadn\'t been used in about 3yrs.
But I heard so many painters talking about using Testor\'s \"Floquil\" figure primer that I bought some to try. you can find it in rc hobby stores if they carry Testor paints, the same company that makes DULL coat $3-$6 american. It\'s only a 3 oz can though!!
