I know i am not a good painter, hell im not even a decent painter. but the reply i recieved was uncalled for

well imho the paint is so cruel u can\'t waste it further with pics :D:D:D:D

no ... seriously,... follow any advices u can find... read all the tutorials u find on CMON... and be a little more self-critical...

u\'ll see ur score boosting up!

im sick of seeing this, i truly am. this whole idea that someone can put something hurtfull or uncalled for up in a reply and end with a \"j/k or :D\" is complete BS. why would someone have put it up there if they didnt mean it? i dont know. and no this post was not brought around because the reply was directed at me, it was brought around because i\'ve seen this on many sites. many of them i rarely visit because of it. and whats even sadder is that i was impressed with this site when i first got here, i really was. i was looking for a site where i could share my painted miniatures and get some cunstructive criticism. but i guess not. oh well

ehy i don\'t think refusing helps will help u... i gave u some tips... u said \"i already do that\" but if u Really do them ... well it\'s strange the effect is the same as undiluited paints!

now.

i gave u other tips. try to be self-critic and start to learn from the (excellent) articles posted here on cmon...

I think Erics point was that he realises he\'s not the best painter on the site, and just wanted tips rather than anyone making a point about it, and in this sense i can see where he is coming from, but Eric please do not take it as hurtful, i\'m sure this was not the purpose at all and cmon really is one of the most friendly places on the web.

Ever heard the saying \"being cruel to be kind\" ?

If you dont want any advice then say so.

Tony\'s first remark there was maybe a bit blunt but that could be down to translation ? He has been here a while and I havnt seen anywhere that makes me think he is anything but a decent guy.

If you are serious about being a better mini painter then stick around and do take the advice from others.
Comments can be harsh sometimes but they can only help make you better.

My biggest tip for you is to make sure you get good solid coats of paint on your figures when basecoating. This makes the figure look neater and is a good basis to start highlighting from.
And practice..........lots of it.

They say Coolmini is a community and in all communities you have asshats. There are people on here that will help you out and give you suggestions and there will people who will act like jerks under the guise of helping you out. Just ignore them and keep painting away. You will never be able to change jerks, just as in life you have to deal with them. If you want to improve you will.

the only answer was

Originally posted by Eric of Xenia: for the record i thin all of my paints down

in this case what more can i say to make him conscious his paintjob is painfully not good? ???

i still say paints seems me undiluited (the paint on the rear armour is really thick... it makes shadows!)

I\'ll give you a little advice. Post your pics with a background. A simple sheet of off white or light grey or blue paper will do it. Your camera can focus on the model and not the things in your room. As for your painting keep at it and take your time. You\'ll get better.

Man, both of you guys could use a typing tutorial, this is not text messaging

Anyway, Tony M, if you said that... the first statement was NOT NICE for a beginning painter. Not helpful, even in jest. The rest was correct of course... self-criticism and following tutorials that is.

Eric of X, Tony is a good painter but perhaps one of our more... blunt... members.

oh ps

looking ur forward posts i have noticed a lot of skillfull painters as pitynoman and so on gave u the same tip.... so... there are 2 choices...

a) we are a bunch of incompetent painters and u are a painting master

b) u should try to listen to the tips that better and experienced (and u have to accept this) painters gave to u

so make ur choice i can\'t force u!

edit NSA i know to be \"blunt\" but the thing i can\'t stand is people who say \"yeh yeh i\'m already knowing/doing it\" when the results CLEARLY not shows that...

I agree with Tony that it is very easy to get frustrated when someone who is clearly not good asks for advice and then dismisses whatever is said to him.

On the other hand the problem with a forum is the disconnection we have from normal interaction and communication. It is all to easy to be overly blunt when we don\'t have to be face to face with the person on the recieving end.

I would suggest for Tony is if you get that sort of reply then just ignore the guy. If he wants to walk around thinking he\'s rhembrant let him. It\'s no skin off your nose after all.

Of course it\'s also your choice; we all have the right to participate.

Ok now everyone GROUP HUG lol

First of all, just because someone asks for help does not mean they should have to take abuse. Why do people have to \"be cruel to be kind.\" Why can\'t they just be kind and helpful? To me being \"cruel to be kind\" is just people on forums being assholes under the guise of \"helping\", probably because they\'re too scared to say the same things to people in real life, so would rather abuse some random stranger online.

@Tony
I don\'t think the point is that he won\'t take tips, just that while giving tips you were also pretty rude and sounded like a jerk. Maybe you were making a harmless joke, and didn\'t mean anything by it, or maybe you were just being a jerk. The point is, this is a forum where people can\'t see or hear you, so it\'s impossible to tell, so maybe you should put more thought into what you’re writing before posting, unless you really don’t care if you hurt or piss people off, which would make you a jerk anyway.

I try not to say anything I wouldn\'t say to a stranger standing right in front of me. My opinion is people should not have to take any kind of unasked for abuse on any forum (or in comments on their submitted pics). This is also why I don\'t usually frequent any forums very often (except to ask specific questions), because there are way too many people that think they can say anything they want, because they are only typing into a computer, don\'t think a real person on the other end is actually reading the hurtful things written, and don\'t have to deal with the social reprucussions with real people in their community (or physical reprucussions, if the guy is bigger than you).

Just my opinion. :D:D:D:D

Um... Eric said the camera made his models look bad, when clearly they are not painted to a standard that is usually accepted as tabletop worthy on CMON. Therefore, the camera comment sounds like a very weak excuse and Tony just said that. He wants to help Eric, I\'m sure of that, but you can\'t help people with their endeavour to get better if you just pat their ass and tell them \"well done\" when, in fact, it isn\'t.

I think we all know that you need to be able to take negative comments. but when Tony said
\"well imho the paint is so cruel u can\'t waste it further with pics \"
that doesn\'t help the guy understand what he needs to improve.

In all fairness to Tony though there are some people who will simply not understand that they are bad and nothing you say will make the least bit of difference.

Ooops. Just read the original thread this was from and that dude total over reacted. One partly negative post and he through all his toys out of the cot. WAY to over sensative!

I don\'t think he said he was giving up the hobby, just not going to hang out on this site anymore.

I also don\'t think he was saying that he was the best painter, or unappreciative of the advice. When Tony said \"thin your paints\", all Eric said was \"I do thin down my paints.\" Then Tony came back with his rude remark. Eric probably does thin his paints (why lie?), maybe just not enough, or he puts on too many coats, or whatever. I don\'t think anything he said deserved a rude remark.

I actually don\'t think his painting is that bad (although not that good either). Some of his minis looked table top to me, some looked a little under tabletop. Remember, not everyone is a pro, and some peoples\' idea of tabletop is better than others, and whose to say what is right. To me if it looks decent at a yard or meter away then it\'s tabletop, because that\'s the distance you\'re looking at it on a game table, which seems pretty easy to me.

Many painters (even bad ones), really care about their work, and get hurt by rude comments, (which is very different from critical, yet helpful comments). No one would say about a pic from the PYP thread, \"wow, your ugly,\" or \"you don\'t look like you take care of yourself.\" So why would anyone basically say on a forum \"your work basically sucks,\" to someone that may put alot of effort and care into their work (even if they aren\'t that good). When that kid just told people to exercise everyone got all pissed off (although I didn\'t), and he did not pic on anyone in particular, but not many seem to care about this issue. Sorry for the long posts, but this is a pet peeve of mine.

Talk about storm in a fuckin teacup.

Get a grip on reality you lot will you.

Tony made an off hand remark that was taken to heart. I do believe the remark seemed worse becuase of Tony\'s lack of expert English language.

Jeez you are making it sound like he raped someone.
