Hi,

i'm looking into how to cast models and there are a couple of questions that i hope some of you could answer.

I have no idea how much plastic is needed to cast a model; for instance if I had 1 liter of platsic how many 35 mm models could one cast?? (is it more like 5-10 or 50 or a 100 ?)

What materials are recommended to cast miniatures???

Does anyone know how to get these supplies in Europe???

Any help would be reallt appreciated!!!!

Hope that I can show the models we're working on really soon!!

Well first you will need to make a mold of the figure/s.... which will probably be in silicone to get all the detailing of the figure.

As to how much plastic - ie resin that you will need - well that depends a lot on how complex the figure is and also how much waste you have from miscasts / airholes and such like. I guess once you've got it to pat you could get about 30- 50 figures from a litre but that is just a guess. There will be others here who will have had a lot more experience with amounts needed to cast small figures.

If you can get hold of one - a pressure pot or a vacuum chamber will greatly enhance your ability to cast figures with less chance of air bubbles / miscasts.

I'm not sure of the exact type of resin that is best for casting miniatures - try PMing Scibor or any of the other mini creators that have a prescence here. If you get a reply they may also tell you where they get there supplies from.. As to where ... well in the UK you could do worse than giving the guys at Mouldlife a call. They are pretty knowledgeable on resins and silicones ... and they sell them too. Also pretty happy to chat about sorting out peoples needs.

Hope that helps a bit.

And how much material is used on one mould is dead easy to measure, just take your master model, immerse it into a container filled with water. (ideally not much wider than you're able to fit the mini in) Then you just measure how much the water level rises and there you have exactly how much material you'll be using. And no, the material and weight of the master is completely irrelevant using this method.
