matt, we\'ve got to work on your photo-foo - right now, your photo-foo is very weak.
Lighting - you gotta have more than one light source. Walk by the nearest portrait studio at the mall. Notice the number of lights and the lighting angles.
Backdrop - print out a nice blue white fade or go to the local photo shop (wolfe photo in most malls) and get a 30% gray card.

i already voted form your WIP page, but for the other mutants that are part of this diorama i suggest labeling them in some way as WIP or part of something larger and maybe provide a link to the thread about the whole work you are doing so people can see things in context rather than just parts.
the picture is a bit dark but its not finished so i voted on what i knew about it while others may not even know this mini is part of a wIP.

its gone down to a 5.2 do you think it could be because of the lighting?
im going to neaten up the highlights on the black armour to sharpen them up a bit. Also, i will take a good 10-20 mins to get one decent photo rather than like 3 mins.
When i looked at my mini at first it seemed good but the more i look at it, the more dissatifsied i feel about it. I might have to just stop looking at it so often except when painting.

remember there is some funky stuff going on behind the voting. some votes are discounted, and the real average doesn\'t even mean anything until 50 votes are hit.
its not like this mini is complete either since its part of the whole \'last stand\' anyway so don\'t worry much about the parts of piece as when they all come together i think people will see how well it looks and what they were all about in stages.
and for a one legged mini with no base an above tabletop quality average isnt bad at all! lol

A base puts the mini in context. No base is kinda like watching a movie without a soundtrack.
The single light makes the shadows very harsh. Makeing it very difficult to see any fine shading.
The right leg is completely in shadow and I can make out no details.
The left leg is missing? folded under him?
The large shoulder armor looks like black primer. There is a highlight, but it is glare from the single light.
Most people don\'t ask for votes on WIP\'s. That is what the WIP forum is for - to post them and get comments and finally finish for a votable mini.
As he sits, painting is about tabletop, but most tabletops need a base. Don\'t feel too bad, my first post scored around a 4 - and I\'d been painting for a while.
Finally, 10 hours on a mini generally gets me above a 7.
9+ minis generally have 100\'s of hours in them.

I\'m surprised this is holding up as high as it is. If I had run across this as a normal vote, it would be a 3, maybe even a 2. There\'s no base, so that\'s a -1, then it\'s a poor photo for probably another -1.
This is why I don\'t like WIP photos on the voting links, as its not finished. But, take to heart that this is a WIP. The finished mini should score a LOT higher. You just need to actually finish!

so basically everyone is telling me to not put stuff up for votes untill the WHOLE thing is finished (thats like a 11 model diorama)
also, he has NO leg. (the picture quality is poor but i explain what has happened.)
you can just about make out some red at the tip of the missing leg which is greenstuff blood etc.

i think that would get better results.
showing it on the display would let people see it isnt jsut some figure lying down. but for those that don\'t think about it when the vote a naseless mini could jsut be a dead/wounded guy.
GW did make a few of those that didnt come with bases for terrain purposes, as well they have some female slaves for on of the dark eldar vehicles that could be placed anywhere.
i think a shot of the finished mini in position on the base would look better.
you may want to try to get something other than a top view of the mini in its palce to showcase the mini from an \"eye\" level POV so it tries to place the viewer into the scene as if they were really witnessing it.
if that is possible around your terrain and with your camera.
just some more ideas and food for thought for you.

Wips are wips and votes are for completion (except greens).
An 11 mini diaroma could be done in multiple submissions or as a single pic or as a single pic with lots of detail shots. The last would probably be best if you don\'t run into file size issues.
I always deduct a point for bad photo and unfinished work. So, looking at the conversion it could have been a 6 less 2 for the bad lighting and photo and unfinished work.
For me all greens get a 4 unless it\'s something truly amazing. It\'s kind of like seeing an unpainted car in the car show. Or beauty pageant without make up or hair do.
