Varnish

So which one do you recommend?

I\'m looking for one that is supposed to be applied directly on the minis with a brush, not a spray.

Also, I want one that (hopefully) dosent make the mini look all shiny and glossy/make black look grey.

What do you recommend?

I recommend using both a gloss and a matte varnish. The gloss coat provides strength, the matte coat provides the proper appearance.

I use Liquitex Gloss Varnish and the Reaper Brush on Sealer. I\'m going to try the Liquitex Matte Varnish sooner or later.

I\'d say two or three thin layers of dull coat. it isn\'t glossy (you don\'t want it to be)
the layers should be thin so you don\'t mess up the model. and do serveral so that the paint won\'t scratch off from the model :)

Unfortunately that\'s what matt varnish will tend to do. And the matter the finish the more it will gray a black, it\'s just a natural consequence of a flat finish.

That\'s why oil paintings in museums usually have a gloss or semi-gloss varnish, because it provides good tonal contrast.

Thanks for the replies.

Maybe I should\'ve been clearer, but I need specific brand names (on good varnishes that dont change the appearance of the paint job too much, and that dont come in spray cans) so I can buy/order them.

Dosen\'t GW make any good one?

I don\'t understand.

There are specific brands mentioned above.

I see mentined Liquitex Gloss, Liquitex Matt, Reaper, Dull Coat (which usually refers to Testors).

I use Testors Dull Coat myself. I don\'t tend to do the gloss coat first as most of my minis don\'t see the gaming table and thus don\'t need the added protection.
