hey guys.

want to do some convertions ( chaos 40k ) that need some chains, but have not used real chain on anything before, have a couple of questions.

1. for hanging chains, im assuming u need to somehow glue the chain so that it does not move anymore? or painting it will be a nightmare wont it?

2. if u dont fix the chain to not move, how the hell do u paint it?

3. where is teh best place to get it in the UK for 28mm minis

any other advice would be great

:)

i just used some on a mini i did. The chain was actually from some old costume jewellry so cant help with shops. painting wise i did this before attaching to the model then just glued either end so it hung loose

hmm, but surely if u do it this way u\'ll end up with un-painted bits of chain, as the links will move when u pick it up again and put it on the model?
and i guess u can\'t highlight this way either.

that is the kinda thing im want to do though.

well i used washes on it so that gets in the gaps, just paint one side, do the other then repeat and that should get it all.

... with chains...

I have been using Chains since a long time, so I hope I can answer your questions...

First off, painting chains is a pain in the ass, becasue of several reasons...

The mere foundation is a problem, because your chains need to be painted in order to look realistic concerning the scale...

I have done it like that: I used carpet tape (tape with both sided sticky side...) to fixate my chain... I strapped it linear on the Tape and because the tape is very thick it has done it´s job perfecty...

Then I sprayed it black...

After that you can paint a bit more than one half of the chain, which is okay... you can paint the rest later...

Another possible precedure is to glue ALL links in the chain together... yes, it is as hard and stupid as it sounds, and it´s very hard, because you have to work very exact... and it will break... and so on...

The chains in my dioramas do move, but it is always posible to correct damage if the main part of the chain IS painted...:)...

3. where is teh best place to get it in the UK for 28mm minis?

I don´t know about that, but at http://modulor.de you could find Chains... or I can send you some for 1 EURO per meter... Plus shipping...

If you want something that is fixed in place, you could use this chain pack from Reaper, though I know Reaper minis aren\'t always that easy to get in the UK. :(

Cheers for those links (ho ho ho ;)) peteh. Finding decent scale chain can be the real bugger I\'ve found (can compromise somewhat on Jewelry chain but it\'s not perfect often).

As for getting it in place, I dribble superglue over it and then quickly dab the excess out of the loops where it tends to settle, leaves it completely solid, if somewhat brittle. Odd time a bit of tidying and cleanup needed after. I couldn\'t imagine painting it when still loose, nightmare!

I use small chain all the time and I fix it with real thing CA glue. Ill apply it at the top and let if flow down the chain filling the gaps. suck off any excess glue with paper towel.. just touch the tip of it to the excess glue and wick it away.

A good source for chain is cheap jewlrey or you can buy chain at hobby model shops that cater to model ship builders.

cool!

thanks for all your help guys, and even advice from a GD winner! :bouncy:

so, seems there is 2 schools of thought, glued or not glued chain, think i\'ll have to try both out.

the reaper chains do look easier to use, but are a bit short for most things i need.

thx all

.
