As part of housecleaning, I've also swept up most usernames with special characters so that they don't interfere with the messaging and browsing system.
If you find you can't login, you should be presented with a page listing all the usernames that have been had the special characters removed and should be able to logon to your new account with your old password. All pictures, comments, messages etc are intact.
