Undead Balrog

That's certainly old school. I think you need a little spray of dulcote on him. A matt varnish will take away that gloss. Also, the paint is a bit thick. You'd be better off with multiple thin coats as opposed to one or two thicker ones.

Hello and thanks for replying....I personally like the "old school" lead mini's...i have been painting gaming mini's since 1980, but haven't really done any in the last 15 years or so..i have about 150 of the old leads.....I joined here in 2011 but didn't pursue it..still the worst artist here...hehe....uugghh.....Perhaps i will restock my palette with some new paints from the store here....What would be a good starter paint set?? Hey Wayne,
I am in the same boat as you. I have a huge collection of old lead minis that I am trying to paint. I just finished the same balrog myself. I would put a base on him. Use a Games-Workshop base and it will add to him. For Paints I use Vellejo & G-W paints. You just need a few to start you out. Go to the local art shop and buy a nice brush, that is very helpful!!!

Here is mine:

Just keep reading, asking questions and painting and you will become better. That is what I am trying to do.

Hi JM,that looks a lot better than the one i did...i also have the same army..hehe...i'll upload pics later of my leads....I've been doing a LOT of thinking about my painting and what passes for gaming and what passes for display...I've never done bases before, never really done a display figure...bases would be destroyed by my ticked of friends throwing my mini across the table after defeating him....ask my Cyclops, his nose if flat like a boxers.....hehe....I have SCENEARAMA's basic diorama kit with everything included, plus i picked up extra grasses and scrub materials...Doing a base was coming for me next anyways as i am going to attempt to do a Groo the Wanderer scene, complete with cave... but i wanted to reach out to some talented folk here first to hopefully bust out of my painting rut and start fresh..I absolutely LOVE the artwork i see here and would like a bit of your shine to rub off on me,so to speak....I will take a shot at him again and maybe in a week i'll upload some updated pics with a base and the shine gone....Wayne
