Ultramarine Venerable Dreadnought Idea

Well that title was quite the mouthfull:D Anyhoo, I just finished painting my Cryx Battle Group. As I spent several hours every day on them for 2 weeks I need something different before I can finish the rest of the army. I need to replenish my cryx-fu;) I wanted to do a nice conversion, a big project. Something that when people saw it on the table or in a display cabinet they would turn their heads and say: \"Wow, that\'s an amazing idea!\" Last night I was cruising on CMON in search of inspirado when I stumbled on this amazing dreadnought:

I alwasy really liked the Dreadnought model, but never actually bought one. This seemed the perfect project for me, as I had a the spare termie chest and a rather nice collection of different Space Marine bits to pimp da dread withlol Well, this got me thinking and I came up with the following idea. Let\'s say some great UM Hero was slain and they put him in a Dreadnought. But since he was such a inspiration to his fellow Marines they wanted to make the dread so he could still command his troops. I want to do the same with the Termie chest as that Flesh Tearers Dread, but instead of using that Chaos Warrior head I want to use the helmless head for the SM Commander box:

So it will kinda look like Karchev the Terrible for Warmachine. I\'ll use GS, Plastic Card and Guitar Wire to make the chest look like the FW Venerable Dread one. The chest will look like only the Hero\'s chest and head is still intact. So my question to you is: Is this a good idea and is it orginal?

Sounds good. I\'ve always wanted to do a Mechanicus Adeptus/Techmarine one -- techmarine torso grafted onto the main corpus of the dreadnought. This model and the one you describe sound very similar in concept.

My thought-- accentuate the fact that this is a body hooked up to life support from the dreadnought, not a man in oversized battle armor. Perhaps the head should be enclosed in some kind of transparent shielding.

And, btw, use Dragon Forge Design power cables instead of guitar wire, much easier to use.:D

That\'s a very cool idea. If/when you pull it off, show us.

Unfortunately, I can\'t help much. But I can share an idea I had for my ven. dreadnought\'s base:

You\'ll need the head from this: Evil Daemon

Get that, and adhere it to your base. Get some green stuff, and sculpt it around the neck to show that it\'s been severed. Place it under the dreadnought\'s foot.
When it comes to painting, use a technique like the lava base one. This\'ll give the effect that the head dissolving into warp-stuff. :D

Good?

Hey that sounds original to me, I love the idea but I think marineboy is right, by just attaching the head it could look a little off. So if you consentrated on the detail between the the body and the armour it could look VERY good. Sounds like some work, but I can\'t wait to see it done. :bouncy:

i saw someone post a dreadnought a lot like this on B&C before it went down...and to be honest, the bare head looked terrible...it just didnt look good witht he dreadnought, but that was his attempt, yours may very well look much different!

when you do i would suggest trying to draw attention awya from the head rather than focusing on it

Just my 2 cents..

If you\'re set on using a bare head.. perhaps paint it to look more like a statue..or a bronze style sculpture.

Another possibility would be to shave down the back of the head.. and mount it on the chest plate.. again, as a tribute to the fallen hero.

I think ya get the idea.

I not that set on the head ;) I will first built the dread, leaving the head off and than fit different heads and bits so what looks best. I could also glue in a regular SM helm and use plasic card to make a collar. That way it will look exactly like the FW one:)

BTW Is B&C ever coming back???? It\'s been months since they went offline.

That would be a same:( I liked the B&C forum. Anyhoo, I bought a Dreadnouht kit today and stared work:) This is the result after an hours work:

I\'m gonna make him charging a hill downwards, using a 60mm rounds with cork used to make the rocks.

well...

Suggestion..it\'s alot of work..I wanted my dreadnought to be moving down giant rock steps...like ancient ruins, falling apart, so at an angle...so i cut the legs at the joins in between the groin thing and what would be the hips..then repositions and used guitar strings to remake teh wires and redid the main joins via pins.

My model is the FW one, so the feet are also separate, not sure on a regular GW dread...if feet are separate, you can also reposition them at angles, etc and use green stuff to make the ankle a bit deeper...

Just a thought. (my dread\'s pose is totally messed up..change it a lot) hehe

The feet are pinned at an angle;) I dryfitted it before I cut any joints and used some cork plates to make a quick prototype of the base. No cutting was necessary. I will glue a round piece of cork plate on a 60mm base and then glue a second piece ontop on the area where the right foot is. Look at the Flesh Tearer\'s Dread I posted, to give you an idea. I\'m not making any senselol

More Dreadnought pimpin\' :

That\'s going pretty well, my friend. Like it.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have a semi-important question to ask:

I have had my venerable Dreadnought for about a year now, and it is still under construction. The reason for this is parts.

When I ordered it, I naively ordered an autocannon, thinking it was quite cool. When it turned up, i soon realised that it wasn\'t supported by the Space Marine Codex, and that if I wanted the specs and rules for it, I would have to buy the Forge World Imperial Armour book at £30, which I couldn\'t afford.

So I decided it would use a lascannon instead. I, however, have never been able to get round to ordering the part. Right now, I do have a regular old plastic normal dreadnought lascannon. Should I use that, or order the part? It would look much better with the official piece.

I don\'t think there is any difference between the FW Lascannons or the plastic GW version. I think it\'s completly oke to use the plastic one;)

Well this is the Dread sofar. I decided to glue the head in. I really look the look of it and I don\'t think it looks out out of place. Built him a big base which I think I\'m going to do in a snow style with icicles hanging from some the outcroppings.
I don\'t know if it\'s that Ultramarine anymore. Anyone knows some cool chapter that this dread fits in to?

looks great so far, i kinda think Crimson Fists for some reason

and as to the head, it doesnt look out of place until you paint it, because then you have a skin coloured head sticking out and it looks funny

but i think the head would look best with Crimson Fists colours, because i envision the CF as always showing their face for some reason...

lookin good
