UK GD 2007 Warhammer Daemon Prince

In a frightening act of organisation I have already started two entries for next year\'s UK Golden Demon.

They are both big and involved projects, and I\'m sure that some pointers and constructive criticism from folks here along the way will be extremely useful. On the other hand, the thought of showing them for the first time on the day is also pretty appealing to me and seems to be something of a tradition.

I\'m not sure what to do really. They are for 40k and Warhammer monster and both daemon princes. It\'s the Warhammer one I\'m most concerned with because it\'s a full sculpt. I\'ve also only made the armature so far, whereas the 40k one is further along so it would be a good record of things too.

I can\'t make a decision so can someone just make it for me please! :D

Well - if the second one is a scratchbuild - it WOULD be nice to surprise it on us :D

But maybe it might also help you to WIP the nomral GW(?) daemon prince if you want some help :p

I know what a pain in the arse the GW 40k daemon prince is to put together for a start - MUCHO pinning and GS filling :p lol

Oh no, that would be far too easy!

My 40k Daemon Prince doesn\'t, and I don\'t think will use a single bit of the actual GW kit. There are lots of other GW parts and plenty of Green Stuff though!

I vote for a WIP thread. I would love to watch your work progress - especially if you\'ll log the work that goes in to creating something of that level.

I think that now you\'ve dangled the proverbial carrot, you should go ahead and do the wip for both of them, in the long run I\'m sure it\'ll help improve them, or at least give you added perspective. So you\'ll loose the unveiling, so what....

I wouldnt show the WIP myself. When I was doing my piece for the GD I pm\'d a few people and asked them to critique it for me. I like the surprise myself. Still if you want to show us we will all look and tell you what we think.

I would really like to see a WIP from you, because it\'s been a while since we\'ve seen any of your work and even then we only caught glimpses ;) The \"surprise\" or \"no one steal my ideas\" factor applies to some people more than others - personally I can\'t see that it makes much of a difference, except if you\'re a veteran GD winner kinda person from whom everybody is expecting something amazing.

It\'s up to you in the end. You could of course just do an ogrebane and put me on your list :innocent:

Yeah, I do have a habit of starting all sorts of projects and finishing very few. My recent complete lack of activity is largely due to a website deadline though. Another reason to do a WIP is that getting feedback would no doubt add some impetus.

Oh screw it, I\'ll do a WIP for the Warhammer one! There\'s potential for disaster with it, whereas I know the 40k is already going quite well, so I\'ll just keep that one behind closed doors for GD. I can always stop the WIP at the painting stage perhaps with this dude (well dudette really) if I feel that I have to.

I\'ll get some photos of the art providing inspiration (a John Blanche picture of a big snake/insect/daemonette hybrid that is in The Forbidden Arts bit of the Slaanesh Liber Chaotica) and the armature done tonight.

Still waiting to borrow a camera from my housemate to do photos, so in the meantime I\'ll kick off with how I got to this stage. It\'s mostly so I can get my thoughts down for future use, but it might be of interest.

THE PLAN I came up with this at the end of September

1) Put as many hours as possible into four entries
It’s not many models to some people but this is probably a push for me. I’m very slow!

2) Finish two models before starting the other two
I know what I’m like – this stops me from ending up with 4 WIPs and no completions.

3) Make them as in-character and weighted to the judges sensibilities as possible
It’s not like winning is my driving factor, I want some showcase level models to put on my shelf! I’m also pretty sure I’m not just being humble when I say that my current abilities aren’t good enough to get a statue.

But then again, they are being done for a competition, so I might as well aim to do well in it, and Vincent Hudson’s Magmatrax guide showed me that in one project it’s possible to make that leap up... Ah who am I kidding, I’d like a prize. In fact I’d like lots of gold demons! And that sword looks nice too!!

Mwahahaha!!!

Ahem!

4) Avoid single miniature categories
I’m not ready to mix it up in there, it’s way too scary, but more than that I’m much more interested in making and painting stuff to a larger scale right now. I already have loads of rank and file models.

5) Really improve at least one skill with each model
Stops me from sticking to what I know and hanging around in my comfort zone. Also makes me better. Woo hoo!

6) Take photos along the way and construct a website to display how I made the models once GD is over
I’m a website developer, so I really should have a decent looking mini site made for myself. This seems like a good reason to do one. I guess this WIP will be my way of building up content for part of it.

THE ENTRIES Instead of kicking into action I then spent far too long writing down and sketching out loads of ideas. Eventually I decided on my final entries and a few weeks later I have even got one properly underway!

Warhammer 40,000 Monster – Iron Warriors Daemon Prince
I’m mid-build with this one but I won’t be showing him as a WIP (not until after GD anyway). You can probably guess at what he’s going to look like, and won’t be surprised to hear that I expect my painting of metallics to get a hell of a lot better here.

Warhammer Single Miniature – Not telling!
I know, I know, it goes against point 4, but the plan is more what you\'d call \"guidelines\" than actual rules! A vanilla model too, because I figure I’ll need a break from all the complex stuff at some point.

Large Scale Model – Not telling!
Probably my best idea ever. It will either be spectacular or a spectacular failure! I really hope I get a chance to finish it, but it scares me. Lots to learn before I even attempt it to be honest.

Warhammer Monster – Slaanesh Daemon Prince(ss)
And at last we get to the actual subject of the WIP! The last model I decided to do, was almost a Warhammer Regiment instead, but once I saw the picture I had to do it.

And hopefully my housemate will turf out his camera soon so that I can do some pictures.

OK, I got the camera, but unfortunately it’s a bit crap, and I don’t have any kind of decent light set up right now. Here we go anyway, and a digital camera gets added to my things to buy after Christmas list!

INSPIRATION This is the picture I’m taking my inspiration from.

DSCN1912.jpg

I’ve never really understood the popularity of Slaanesh. Whilst they are great in the game, and their background also has some cool elements, I think the fairly common use of pastels and bright pink has put me off them!

Mr Blanche’s illustration manages to capture a side of Slaanesh I like a lot though. I realize you either love or hate his work (I personally think it’s superb) but even if you aren’t crazy about the way he renders his art you’ve got to admit this is a cool concept right? There’s a graceful, deadly elegance mixed with a more hideous alien/horror side. She’s just really dark, nasty and chaotic looking!

She’s also going to be a challenge, but I think that it will be worth it. I’ve not seen her done by anyone before either (please let me know if you have) which is a bonus.
_________________________
SIZE

I’ve followed a few clues about scale on the picture. The blades threaded through the flesh give a basic point of reference, as does the gauge of the chains. Best of all is the head morphed into the shoulder, which looks vaguely human. Taking that as a guide I\'ve calculated that she’s... fairly big!

OK, so I\'m not being very scientific about it. In the end I’ve just guestimated it rather than making sure the scale between the art and the miniature is perfect. I don’t see it as that big a deal. I figure she’ll be about 150mm high, and fit on a base about 150x150mm wide.

Any thoughts on the size? The armature bellow gives a better idea of how large it will be because there is a Gobbo for comparison. I don’t want to go too over the top with it, but it has to be impressive. If you add in the coiled tail it means she is actually pretty large so I figure this is about right.

CHANGES

Whilst I like the overall look there are things I’m not so keen on in the John Blanche picture which I will be changing. I’ve also had to make some assumptions about what’s going on on the other side.

Tail, Lower torso and legs – Will be as in the picture. The back leg looks to come from two different sockets right? That’s how I’ll be sculpting it I think, should be cool. I see the dirty pink bits as a sort of fleshy carapace, with the black bit beneath more glistening and snakelike.

Mid torso and lower arms – Again this will be pretty much as in the picture. I may cut back on the number of boobies a bit! It looks to me like they should be duplicated on the other side behind the protruding spikes. I’ll probably cut back on the number of blades through the skin too.

Upper torso – OK, so in the picture the upper torso is tilted towards us slightly, which means that she actually only has one row of boobs, with the spike running through her nipple closest to us (Yikes!). I think I’ll go with this, but if it starts to look unbalanced I may change it.

The tentacles I am going to do almost like hair flowing from her side and cascading back and down.

The major change is that I am going to turn the torso so that it is facing the other way (to her right) as I feel that this side will be more interesting as the main front view (because of the curled tail on show and the tentacles hanging down I figure attention should be drawn to this side).

Head – I like it a lot as it is. Not sure about the mini heads at her neck though so they will probably go. I also don’t know if I should try and replicate the shower of needles being spat out... I’ll get to that much later!

Upper Arms – Nothing wrong with these from my point of view!
_________________________
ARMATURE

I’ve kept it pretty basic so far and built up a frame that supports the main body and torso area. The legs that are attached are going to be the front ones and the other limbs sticking out will be the spindly lower arms.

It’s made with floral wire, with a thinner wire coiled around it to avoid the modeling clay from slipping up and down the wire. I’ve also used it to bind the arms in place firmly as they are made with a second bit of wire.

Note that the armature\'s arms and legs are longer than they will be once done. I\'ll just snip them down when necessary.

So next I’ll be adding a thin layer of Green Stuff over this, and then putting a 50/50 mix of Super Sculpey and Super Sculpey Firm on top before it dries to aid the adhesion. Once I’ve done that I can start building up the basic shape of it.

Any thoughs so far? I know it\'s not that exciting just yet but I\'d hate to get something wrong already!

Ooook, erm.
Are the arms going to be like the sythes? I\'f they are the sweapt back look is pretty sweet! But part of me thinks the pose would be trading off balance for dynamics :~(
I\'m no sculpter really, but i think I get the gist of it. Is the neck going to be as long as the length above the arms or is it another \"snip job\"?
I reckon a concept sketch of your idea would be a usefull tool at this stage. No ones actually sure what were really supposed to be looking at lol

Well I kinda thought the John Blanche picture would serve as the concept! Here\'s a quick image to show what area of the picture the wire represents.

As I said, nothing terribly spectacular so far but hopefully with this it makes more sense.

I reckon without the tail bit it\'d look a bit unbalanced, but A hell of a striking figure!
As far as the armature goes on that score it\'s looking good!
I really need to get my ass in gear and sculpt something...

Also planning on some Daemons this year. I am going to dedicate some time to learning, I will pay attention to what people write here instead of just doing what I think is easy. Maybe I can get to a decent standard by September.

I\'ve bought some stuff. Hopefully I can enter half a dozen categories. I have some sneaky plans too.

Well done to any who trawled through all of my text. More pictures and less words as things progress I hope.

Torn Blue Sky - I will be making everything in the picture, tail and all. At the moment I\'ve only done the armature for part of the model. I\'ll add extra wire out the back for the tail as I start putting the first bits of Sculpey on it.

Darkartminiatures - Thanks, I\'m gonna need it!

Dammekkos2 - Sneaky plans rock!

Generulpoleaxe - I know what you mean, other than Golden Demon and catching up with people I used to work with at GW there really isn\'t anything that interests me at Games Day either. And it\'s pricey, and there\'s the chore of transport. It would help if I knew I\'d get to see some new miniatures, but they will have been on Warseer months before anyway!

I\'ll get to say hello to people from here for more than a minute before having to rush back to work this time around though, which will be both a cool, and somewhat odd experience!

Nothing odd about it once you get over the feeling of being lost in the company of wolves...and have a few jars...
I go for the people and demons anything else is a bonus.
Anyhow. I see where you\'re going with it now! Bit confusing not having the armature for the tail. Personaly I would have added it first. It\'ll give a better guide of the overall outcome I reckon (and most likely an easier option than tagging it on later).
Looking forward to seing how this pans out though!
