Tyranids, looking for ideas on shell markings and livening them up

Bought a bunch of nids on ebay, got it all for about 50% off retail. I havent had much time to paint so these minis were appealing to me in that they were a good price and seem to have a very neat \"Basecoat\" already.

I will definatley add layering to the bodies and pick out details a little better for starters. I was looking for some ideas on Shell markings, perhaps something as simple as small stripes for the gaunts, leading up to more ornate markings on the warriors and other bigger bugs, but something that fits together.

Also any ideas for stripes or spotting on the bodies would be great too. I don\'t mind spending more time on the warriors on up, but something simple but attractive for the Guants, Genestealers and other mass troops.

Here are some pics of what I have to work with:

The First pics of the green nids are what the base of my Army will be. I might like to make them a bit darker green which I could do with a black/green light \"Magic Wash\" then hightlight up. Again any ideas are greatly appreciated.

In the past few years there has been some conceptual artwork of what dinosaurs might have looked like. Some of them were painted with interesting patterns. Mabey a google search?

I like looking at reptiles, especially Chameleons for interesting ideas.. I have a better pic at home, but I found an orange and green one similar to this:

Wait till next week or Google it!

As for Photoshop, you have several options: Lighten mode will only paint on dark or near black areas, while Darken will paint light areas (good for Highlights/Shdows) and Overlay will allow you to \"see\" through the colors.. It\'s best with black and white images without freehand or patterns (like GW usually paints their minis)..
