My aim recently has been to develop a smoother finish to my minis. I have gone some way towards this goal by watering down my paints even more than I used to, and building to highlights over more, thinner coats. Some other things I have been trying are below.
With the mini I am painting at the moment, I have been experimenting with how I put the paint on with the brush. Until now, I have painted on with definite strokes and dabs. I am trying out different methods now, such as using even thinner paint, and dabbing the paint around where it needs to go, and using the interaction of quickly applied very thin coats to build up the highlights with fewer brush strokes showing. Also, I recently washed the model a second time, despite having taken the highlights up as far as I wanted to go. This dulled the model, but left the range of tones roughly in place and smoothed everything out in the process. Now I am taking the highlights back up again over the top, with very thin coats.
I have to say, for a while all this experimentation was feeling like a mess, and I almost binned the mini twice.
I think starting to come together though. I took some shots of it as a WIP to look at enlarged, and I see far fewer brush strokes than on my previous minis.
I don\'t know if I\'m going in the right, or a good, direction, but experimentation has got to be good for your skills. =)
{Have Bragon\'s DVD on order too, and can\'t WAIT to see what I am going to learn from that. =)}
That is all..have a nice day everybody, and I would be pleased to hear your comments and suggestions about this.
