Top 20

Hey guys, its my aim to get into the top 20 within the next year or so. I know i need at least 5 mini\'s with an average of 9 or more, my last few mini\'s just don\'t seem to be hitting the right buttons with you lot out there, even though IMHO, they\'re just as good as my older posts, any comments ( or good votes) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time, cheers

Unpredictable

Hey there,

I think looking over some of your excellent paintjobs, that you have been a bit hard done by with some of your ratings :(

It is useful to keep in mind that some people don\'t vote above an 8 for an unconverted mini, which puts you at a disadvantage to start with, as a lot of your paintjobs are on the factory mini (although they are excellent and I would certainly consider some to be 9\'s and 10\'s in my opinion)

Also there seems to be differences with when you post and how your scores go, as obviously different people have different opinions, and a lot rely on there personal preference to form the score meaning you could end up with a low score on a high quality paintjob. There is also the factor of people putting low marks on just for fun, and if there are a lot of that sort of person about when you post, then you could be in trouble. All in all though, I think if you work on converted projects and try some different techniques then I can certainly see you challenging for a top spot. I will go and place a few votes, and maybe make a few comments, maybe you could do the same for me, as it is always nice to see what people think :D

Hope that helped and good luck (P.S remember don\'t pay too much attention to the voting, as it can be unreliable, comments are sometimes more important)

Fickle Finger of Fate

Your painting skills are definately up to snuff. I have voted on your figs, and they are incredible.

I think it is great that you have set yourself a goal, and a lofty one at that.

But, as PeteTheMighty says, don\'t put too much stock into the votes. The CMON voters seem to be very fickle lot (no offense as I am a fickle CMONer myself!)

Like I said, I believe you definately have the skills to pull it off. Good luck!

P.S. My goal is to just get a solid overall 7 on one of my entries (baby steps...baby steps)lol

So we have to think what is the difference between an 8.x and a 9.x... First of all you have to start with a good sculpt. A bad sculpt can only go so far in points it seems.

Here is a list of what I think will improve your ratings:
decent size areas of very clean freehand
more NMM
decorative bases
good color choices and composition

Once your technique is good enough to score high (which yours certainly is), composition becomes one of the most important aspects. Take a look at some of the top 20 artists\' works. Observe the colors used top to bottom, the transitions, the colors used next to each other, and the lines formed by a color scheme. Take a look at where the colors used lie on a color wheel. If it\'s a conversion, observe the lines of movement, and where your eye is drawn. Even some small conversions like bending an arm into a different position, or replacing a straight sword with a curved one or a hafted axe can go a long way if it enhances the composition.

Now you have to realize I don\'t paint anywhere near the quality you can, but I do vote, so take my advice as you will...

Well, all my little red scores are about a point above the actual vote tally, so I guess I\'d already put you closer to the top painters than you are. That\'s actually kinda unusual, since I\'m typically a half point below the vote total....

Anyhow, if you want to be what people like, you have to do what people like...so you\'ll have to follow 3 simple rules:

1.) Paint a Rackam fig. I know that they look like they\'re on the Treblinka & Silicone diet, but people like them. So there you go.

2.) Paint NMM, or SENMM. Anything else is a 7, tops. ;) Paint things that normally would be leather or cloth SENMM. Paint the face SENMM and say you were trying to go for a look \'like that guy in terminator\'. To really cover yourself, paint the whole damn mini NMM and call it a \'chrome elemental\'. Make sure we can see you holding a brush in the reflection.

3.) Replace the torso, arms, legs, & butt of the mini with green stuff.

Ovus...

That is really funny...lol

Unfortunately, I think you have hit on more than just a grain of truth there....:innocent:

Hey, I really like your stuff, and would/have voted most of it a 9-10.. however it just lacks something, and it\'s tough to put my finger on.

Like the templar.. Great paintjob.. and I love the addition of the book, but it\'s rather large.. and it\'s just kinda hanging there, like he was wandering through the library after someone poured glue on his shoulder pauldron and he bumped into a bookshelf. It might be neat if you added ropes or chain holding it open and against him. The eyes on this model seem a bit hollow too, you might want to paint them up more gemlike.

The vahallan captain is absolutely brilliant. The mordheim freelance knight is also wonderful. As was said earlier you might want to try a little more conversion.

Anyways, I wish you luck with your goal, and realy look forward to what else you have to put out! :)

Absolutely some very nice work, a very distinct style as well.

Me, I\'m just glad to have finally clawed my way into the top HALF of the rankings...at least for one day... :bouncy:

Thanks all for taking the time to put down your thoughts and encouragement. I should realise that we\'re all members of the FBOP and that you can\'t please everyone all the time. Do you suppose thats why theres no 10\'s?
Pete- thanks for the comments, although your\'e right about not paying attention to the scores, it is the way the mini\'s on this site are rated, and i do want to do well.
Supervike- thanks for the vote of confidence. i\'m sure it wont be too long till your\'e hitting 7\'s.
Mengu- Thanks, its always good to know what criteria others use to judge figures.
Ovus- I\'m starting to branch out into other manufacturers, i\'d love to paint some rackam stuff ,i\'ts just hard to come by. I\'ve started some warmachine stuff, love the sculpts.

I like your stuff, but I find it lacks any \"WOW\" factor, which is something I need in order to give a 10. It can be anything from mind-boggling detail to amazing technique or a crazy effect, but it needs some spice, which I fail to find on your work. Though you sure can paint.

Dr. Bob

but not THAT Dr. Bob
It\'s always great to have a goal, but I\'m afraid you\'ll spend more time worrying about what scores you get rather than focusing on the fun of painting minis. Sounds like you\'re just asking for an ulcer or something ...

You are a great painter though; can\'t deny that!

You really are a great painter

I agree that you need to focus on the joy of painting, take joy from the fact that others look up to your work. And in the smilieys. :flip::bouncy::flip: Learn what you can from those deemed a 9 or higher and keep trying, but don\'t let that be your sole goal. I haden\'t the guts to post what I have to be voted on, yet but I\'m working on a few now being inspired by you. Thankz!

ork warboss - very detailed but just seems to be missing color or it could be the photo. maybe some harder depth.

daemonette - once again great detail all round but the skin itself seems to lack any hard depth to lend to the rest of the mini. parts of her seem very dark like the red and gold on the arm but other parts seem very blandiush like her skin and the colors on her head while well done seem so subtle they arent really appreciated enough.

Tyranid - again the white aka the main color on his body seems to be very plain while the rest of him is more contrasted.

=I= Emperors Children Renegade - ditto. the pink seems somewhat shaded or it could be that the camera just isnt picking up the light.

=I= Assassin - her hair only seems half done and looks like its missing some finer highlights like yellow and more detail. a good multiple drybrushing might help.

Lucretia Belladonna - the camera seems to be playing hell with this photo. the red has huge highlights in which i cant tell if they are painted on or a light source.

Mordheim Freelancer - this is a damn sexi mini with a damn sexi picture and it has got a ded sexi rating.

Chaos Mutant Bust - alot of white inbetween the pink, would be nice to see some better shades inbetween and the paint on the base seems kinda splotchy but that might be picture compression.

Typhus, herald of Nurgle - very good, near the score you desire, id add some yellow to his red and green highlights, or maybe orange to the red highlights anyway, and maybe trick out his scythe some more, once again its great but its lacking a depth that can be defined by the camera.

=I= Valhallan Captain - hella cool skulpt but if yah painted it with maybe a picture of the original skulpt next to it, i think it would score much higher.

Succubus - the wings are lacking a bit, maybe trick her out like you did that one bloated daemon prince, with the cool see through type wings you know? also maybe add a second flesh tone, you know how some people have pink and biege, maybe give her blue and white or white and pinked out skin areas.

Shae, Elven archer - her shirt is very red without much shading it seems and her cape would be a bit cooler instead of a line pattern maybe a swirly vine pattern. love the base by the way. also the ink lines seperating her hair and face seem a bit thick to me.

please tell me your niel or else i seriously screwed your name up in the book!

Wightzombie, my name is Neil, I hope you have got i right otherwise I think I\'ll have to join Chrispy on the \'how to spell my name wrong\' thread.
Back OT I posted this thread to give me a kick up the a$$, I have a tendancy to start stuff & not finish ( a familiar feeling for a lot of us I\'m sure), so by declaring my intentions to get into the top 20 gives me the push to attempt to better my painting and composition. After all the scores are the benchmark by which we assess our abilities. \'Nuff said.
Thanks all and keep those votes & comments comin\'
