Thoughts on Gimmicks

Skaven Gray Seers should glow in the dark, right? What about wraith eyes? Holy symbols? Should the cockpit canopy be glossy while the rest of the Mech is matte? If the lava on the base actually glows from an LED, does that make it cooler? If a Rhino makes a \"kaboom\" noise when you press down the heavy bolter, is that childish or not? What if a VASA Viper has a remote control? How about a Wolfen with eight points of articulation?

I love gimmicks, but I\'m not sure if things like that are appreciated on this site. Just wondering where to draw the line.

My next intended project is a sculpted clock fairy that would serve as a working drum machine for a moon fairy band.

Obviously, I will have to paint it very well in order to get a reasonable score on this site, but should I even bother to mention the other attributes of the figure? Would the fact that it makes a rythmic buzzing noise when switched on influence the rating? If so, how?

hmmm .... my bag of question marks seems to be empty now .... I\'ll have to do some whittling tonight.

Ready...Set.....HIJACK!!! ;)

You\'ve been talking with McFarlane again, haven\'t you...

Gimmicks are probably fine but since we can\'t appreciate them fully from a picture, we\'ll likely vote on the paint job alone. However, I suspect that using ACTUAL lights to produce a light-sourcing effect will, ironically, be seen as cheesy... :)

Well...he suggested 470 points, but that seemed somewhat less than plausable...:D

I\'ve actually seen a Space Marine with a blue LED in the base on here. It looked cool and people seemed to enjoy it. Of course, they *might* have been biased toward the marine due to chapter loyalty. errmm....I don\'t think I should get into that again :innocent:

Yeah, I don\'t think that we would really see the gimick, and if we did I think we would most likely have a reaction similar to, \"That\'s really stupid, and ruins the paintjob. This guy has no skill as a painter.\" I don\'t think many people would take the time to consider how much skill was involved in the actual gimick. This site is too visually oriented for that. :flip::bouncy:

yeah but is it cool?

I\'d say gimmicks are great as long as they don\'t ruin the look of the mini.

For instance someone (temperance i think) once posted a mini on a flight stand. The flight stand was actually an adjustable antenna from a radio. It was really cool because, for gaming anyhow, one could adjust the elevation all the way up to eighteen inches....Very gimmicky, yet very cool!

Depends on the gimmick! Object Oriented Light Sourcing was a gimmick, now it\'s a cool, and a dream of a number of people to emulate and get right.
Wizards with lightening bolts running from fingers and not looking like completely out of scale electrical lighting wires, now that would be good!

Personally I think all of these gimmics are extremely cool. I think the most important thing though is whether or not you think it is cool. Who cares what your mini gets rated if you like it. Maybe we should change the name of the site to \"cooly painted mini or not\" since everyone votes on the paint job anyway.
