Hi all,
Well, I almost put this in the What\'s your town famous for. But decided that it really does not fit well there.

This is a link to a little news article about where my husband works, I thought you might find it interesting. No he is not one of the people on the video. (watch the video!) I call him my Nuclear Janitor! Unfortunately what they are talking about in this article is VERY true. A couple of years ago Stuart (hubby) was diagnosed with Beryllium Sensitivity. It will eventually turn into Chronic Beryllium Disease. It will kill him.
This is directly related to his work at Hanford.

Any how, I wont bore you all with a lot of details, just thought I would share.... what my town is famous for :(

Pardon me, but why would anyone with a brain be working there in the first place? It\'s lunacy to be anywhere near a place like that.

After years of screwing the world over in the Cold War, this is the real legacy of the stand-off with Russia. Normal people getting hurt. Still, they shouldn\'t be anywhere near there if they were of sound mind.

Well, i reckon that with the right safety precautions it should not be that different from another job. It becomes more of a problem if you think it\'s safe, but the company tries to cut costs by saving on safety behind the backs of their personnel (which was described in the article) and tries to cover up afterwards...

Sorry to hear of your families predicament.
With all the technology of alternative power, such as solar. Why cant responsible countries at least try to use alternative energy systems.
My uncle who was there (not out of choice I may add) at the U.K.\'s first atomic tests, has seen many of his mates die, his house is now virtually self sufficient in energy.
Why dont our governments put some of their money into trying to replicate this, and do away with such dangerous practices for the future of our race.

One word: Money


A few more words: getting enough energy for an ever growing population. Room shortage (you can\'t put up endless electricity windmills as room runs out) and I bet there are more reasons. But if it can be done the safer and enviroment friendly the better.

I\'m sorry to hear this Gin. Sucks when money comes before safety.

The roofs of many houses are a perfect place to put solar panels. I saw a program where they also had a small wind turbine on the top of the house as well. Anyway I guess we will all pay the price for our selfishness. I wonder how much of our countries will be left when, as our government suggests, the sea will rise 7 metres/20 ft in the next 30 years. Maybe they will find the money and space then. Enough of this morbid subject, I like your badger vince, and cdukino, impressive painting.

The reason he works there... (condensed, simplistic answer) Hanford on horribly polluted, the radioactive waste in leaching into the ground and water in the surrounding area, it is migrating to the Columbia River, and will eventually lead to the Pacific ocean. This is BAD.
When he started at Hanford Stuart worked in a PUREX facility (extracting plutonium and uranium from fuel cells)
When the cold war ended so did the Hanford mission. Unfortunately there is 50 years of waste that needs to be dealt with and cleaned up and someone has to do it, we cant just lock the gate and walk away, the repercussions to the environment would be disastrous.

Hanford was never built for energy use. Matter of fact most of our electricity here is Hydro (from the Columbia) we also have huge wind farms.

Hanford was built for weapons production. It has not been operational for years.

The thing that struck a nerve with this article, Stuart was diagnosed with Beryllium Sensitivity several years ago. When he filed with the Government for future compensation (read ... if it kills him then they would pay) He is not looking for any money from his government, only if he dies. (I know that sounds harsh.) Like most of the folks that work at Hanford who have medical problems caused by their work his claim was denied.
I guess the bottom line is these guys just want to know that they and there families will be taken care of if they become ill or die due to cleaning up the Hanford waste land. I don\'t feel its to much to ask.

Sorry if I sounded harsh, buit it seemed like there was a complaint being made on what was a very avoidable scenario, like a Lion Tamer complaining that a lion bit his head off if that isn\'t a silly analogy).

Hope something gets sorted.
