Hello and welcome to the forums.

Thin paint as much as you feel easy with.Too thin and it is harder to control.
It all depends on what technique you use as well.Feathering is what I use most for blending and that is at least 50/50 paint to water. This takes more coats to build up the colour but will get smoother finishes.
Washes are even thinner.
Experiment to find out what you are comfortable with.

Thinning paint

Hi there,
The best way to thin paint is to add small drops of water to your blob of paint and mix them together. It should flow like creamy milk (was this DR\'s analogy originally?). However if you apply it and it runs everywhere it\'s too thin (too much water). You could also use a flow-extender of some sort but I think water is fine for thinning acryllics. Also this article has been discussed many times before I\'m sure, use the search function.

Sure folks here will have some better suggestions...

You can also thin paints with an ink of a similar colour. I never paint black now without thinning it with an equal amount of blank ink.

I generally thin a drop of paint on my wet pallet with 2 drops of Kevin\'s secret sauce.

8 oz bottle
1 oz Flow Aid
1 oz Retarder
6 oz Airbrush medium (because I have quarts of this stuff - you can also use glazing medium or water)
1 or 2 DROPS of dish soap.

Transfer to a 3/4 oz dropper bottle (got mine from a pool store - old test kit - wash well)

Couple more things

As for how thin you want your paint, it should be thin enough to flow smoothly without leaving clear brush marks. You can always test on a sheet of paper or your thumb.

You can thin your paint more if you use a pallet with wells instead of a wet pallet. With a wet pallet, if the paint is too thin, it will soak right thrrough or run everywhere.

For another, load your brush very lightly, so you have more control when you apply the paint. Blot on a paper towel, damp sponge or bit of old cotton t-shirt.
