Who has experience thinning jars of GW paint as they start to thicken up? What do you use? Is thinner better than water, and why? Is cheap craft store thinner different than Vallejo thinner and why? What other products are good? Thanks!

i just got sick of them drying up to quick, even when water was added and changed to vallejo.

did it whilst i worked for a certain company:)
it was even cheaper than buying the stores own brand with my discount.

find out what other brands are available to you wether they be via a shop or the internet.
you will save yourself a fortune and have better quality paints.

You can actually revive almost completely dried and hardened pots with boiling water and something to stir with. I also reecommend storing them out of direct sunlight in a cool environment.

(Keep \'em in the fridge next to your green stuff and the hotdogs!)

I think you\'ll find it pretty difficult to thin the plastic jars that GW paint comes in. (Sorry I couldn\'t help myself).

However if you want to thin the paint that comes with the jars (paint pots) you should just add a little pure water.

Another suggestion to prevent the paint from drying out while in the jars is to keep the paint jars in a 100% airtight container when not using them. Also, try not to let any sunlight / filtered sunlight come in contact with the paint jars. That will keep \'em fresh.

Good luck!

Thanks guys.

I don\'t want to compare GW with any other brand. I use several brands and for several reasons I have no plans to stop using GW. There are countless other threads that debate the GW/Vallejo question. Yes, Vallejo paints are good.

These aren\'t paints that are in any danger of drying up. I\'m looking for a method of upkeep, to add a few drops of liquid every now and then.

Specifically, I\'d like to know about the chemistry of the paint. Is there any drawback to using water rather than thinner? What is acrylic thinner, actually? Is there a difference in quality from brand to brand?

I found to thin GW paints in their bottles (liquitex) makes an excellent Airbrush medium which is inexpensive and comes in a large bottle 237mL. Drop in some of it and just let it sit on top of your paint... it will not dry up as long as you have the cap on. I use it instead of water to thin my paints while painting.
