The Pigs Reboot

Been away from the brushes for a decent length of time, I'm table top painter, mostly historical miniatures, looking to go a bit further with my painting. I carefully watch painting vids and read the how to's and I'm pretty sure I understand the basics but need that extra push and advice to make it click.

Been a member here for a long time but falling away from the hobby never felt comfortable posting anything much, anyway I'm here to have a go. I have been practicing my brush strokes on a couple of English Civil War Figures. I think I remember which way up to hold the brush (furry end against the figure right?) and have gotten hold of a "Hot Chick" figure for my jump in the deep end of the pool.

My English Civil War practice pieces I wont embarrass myself by saying how long it took to get these finished, I like my gaming armies satin coated.... I know I know.

My attempt at some proper good painting innit? Reaper Chained Succubus, it didn't occur to me until after I started that this is my first attempt at non human flesh... it is a pain. She has had a couple of visits from the acetone soaked cotton bud! Sooo, in truth it isn't my first attempt, about my third. Hey each one got a little better.

I'm going to move onto the wings before the arms due to some predictable interference and I have no idea what colour will work, so, any advice would be greatly appreciated... helpful criticism too.

Thanks KruleB, I have to say coming back into painting and wanting to push myself has been rewarding and frustrating in equal measure. Some days I get so cranky at the figure/brushes I want to rage quit it and bin the whole shebang, then I get something to work and all is sweetness and light again.... for a few minutes

The purple is looking really nice, nice blends and contrast, for the wings maybe do the flapy parts as a fleshy colour, something like a lightly tanned human tone?

Zab

Almost Perftec! Aw, crap.
Welcome back - great start on the skin, since you seem to be a sadist why not do the wings black like a bat?

Thanks Sick and Zab.... The flesh colour is an interesting idea, I wonder how that would sit against purple? My original thought was black as it would frame the body, the deep red isn't going to work because that starts to look like a brownish colour against the purple (tried a little bit just for a look-see).

I will paint a portion of the wings and see how your suggestions fare, once again thinks for your input.

Aaaargh! I'm frustrated by something so simple. I was trying a deep purple to red colour on the wings, besides not looking all that good as a colour choice my eyes could not pick up the gradients and half steps between the two colours so I was putting paint and filters in the wrong places.... anyone ever have that trouble? T'was well weird.

Anyway it is a fail, so just as well I only limited myself to a small patch. Going to clean it off and re-prime in black and go for black wings... I'm crappy at highlighting black.

Glazed the bod as well to get the transitions to play nice but might have had my mix a little too strong, particularly on her girl abs, mmmm girl abs :hypnotized:

The wing doesn't look to bad. Sometimes you need to glaze the whole area with your mid tone to smooth it out, then work on the shadows and highlights again....then repeat until you are happy with it ( or want to chunk it across the room! Lol ;))
