Happy New Year !

Please find below my 2013 WIP Log! Never done one of these before so let me know if format sucks or whatever. Also be advised I am a relatively inexperienced painter compared to most.

First this year is Frank Hyde from up and coming British company 'Infamy Miniatures'. http://www.infamyminiatures.com/, if you fancy a painting challenge to test your skills, check out their Watson and Holmes figures -insane!

The model itself is a beautiful sculpt of the highest quality. Almost no mouldlines or clean up required and went together like a dream. Here is the main body glued and primed white with Citadel's 'Skull White' primer. (Sorry for photos).

I started the base coat by applying Citadel 'Tallarn Flesh' with an Airbrush. Its 50:50 with water and a couple of drops Vallejo thinner and one drop of Tamaya X-21 Flat Base (not too much or the effect is chalky).

Then the I laid out the rest of the skin tone I planned to use for the face, starting with the highlights. I added Citadel Elf Flesh to the original base coat, 50:50, then 60:40, then 100% pure Elf Flesh, then finally a few drops of P3 Menoth White base added for final highlights. I mix them 60:40 with distilled water and add a drop of X21 Flat Base as before. I mix up plenty of Paint to last a session. I also keep a record of what paints I used on each model on an index card for future reference. This I find useful because sometimes (OK - usually) it doesn't work out so I know not to use that combo again!

Here is the face at various stages of highlight.

I have also used a mix of Menoth White Base and Skull White to mark out the eyes. Not too bothered bout the detail of them just yet. I leave that until last.

The idea is to just make the area lighter where the light would hit in progressively smaller areas. It doesn't have to be a perfect blend at the moment. Also, because I made enough of the shades up to begin with I can go back and forth with the other colours as need be the smooth it out. By starting with the highlights and not the shadows as some people do, I can afford to make a few more mistakes as covering light colours is easier than covering dark!

Below is the full skin palette for the face. Highlights are on the top as before. For the shadows I start with Citadel Tallarn Flesh again, this time adding Citadel Scorched Brown to it until I end up with pure scorched brown. I used much more water for the shadows than the highlights, so probably as weak as 70:30 water to paint.

The bottom 3 colours are Citadel Hawk Turquoise, P3 Sanguine Base, and Citadel Leviathan Purple. These three will be used as washes to add nuances to the skin and hopefully make it interesting!

Below are the shadows going in:

And finally where I am up to so far! There is still plenty of tidying up to do, and I have blocked in the hair only so far.

Thanks for looking!

He's looking really great so far and the colours and tones that you have running through the face are building in a good bit of depth. So, that's about 1% of the flesh looking good, only 99% left to go. ;)

That is one crazy miniature with an awful lot of skin to paint. You are braver than I am, lol.

Any chance on some slightly closer pictures of the face? I like what I can see, but a bigger picture would help show of the work a bit more.

Thanks for the comments!
@Lono, the metallics worry me more than the skin! (not that the skin doesn't worry me)
@Taarnak, I will try to get better photography. I have all the gear, Macro lens, lights etc, pictures just look crap.

Anyway, got a little update. Did some work on the chains. I wanted to get these done before doing the body as there will no doubt be mistakes made given the fineness of the chain and its proximity to the flesh.
Started by blacking out the chains. Also blacked out his boots, shorts and the base, to make it easier for seeing contrast when I do the torso skin next.

Next a base of P3 Pig Iron mixed with a little Vallejo Model Black. Whilst everybidy rants how good Vallejo Air Metallics are (and they are brilliant imo), the P3 Metallics are really great too. (So are Citadel old range, never tried the new ones).

On top of this base, I then highlight with Citadel Boltgun Metal and then Mithril Silver. To make the chain more interestng I added some different coloured inks. The Tamiya Clear Orange is a personal favourite, but I dont think it really matters what colour inks you use, just breaks up the flatness of the steel colour. I use them straight out the bottle with the additive.

The result looks a bit like a Christmas Tree:_

After that I just went and picked out a few of the links with mithril silver again, trying to imagine where the light would hit it the most.

This was the final work on the chain, for now..

Coming along nicely. I do similar things with W&N inks. They are lovely to use aren't they. Flow well and just where you want them. Shame the lids get so crusty though.

The neatness of your painting is kinda scary to me. There would be splashes all over the place if I was going at the model, but I guess everyone has an approach that works best for them. Yours is just insanely tidy! ;)

The chains look good and shiny with a hint of wear and tear. Are you thinking of working any rust into them with pigments? If so, it may be a good plan to do that ahead of finishing off the skin. Also, talking of pigments (not that I want to distract you with loads of new techniques) but there are some pretty cool ideas for using pastels n large skin areas in this video. Granted it's a way larger model, but may be transferable if you wanted to add even more interest - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HjkO44H-AU

@pariahrob - Thanks, yeah those WN inks are really nice and pretty cheap too I think.
@Lono - Defo - At the moment the chain is too shiney - I was thinking about adding the rust pigments (mig) at the very, very end but you propose to do it now? Makes sense. I will do it next. I really liked that video - I think it will be worth nipping to Cass Art Supplies and getting some pastels, as my vision for the skin will benefit form that type of effect! Thanks!

I think you could really benefit from the use of a contrasting pastel colour, especially around the chain because the rust colour is kinda the same as the skin colour. Schnauzefacemini's is an awesome youtube channel, that guy is awesome and I love watching his videos. there is always something interesting he contributes.

I'm really looking forward to what you will do with him looking at the paint job from the website, he's going to be as awesome :)
Great work so far!
