I not normally given to caring about such things but this has really pissed me off. Just went into my account to see how things where things stood only to discover that all my top five models appear to have be subjected to some fairly concerted sniping.
I\'ve always just ignored this sort of behaviour in the past (although I do understand why people get really upset about it). However one of my models has over 300 votes and has been stable on a 9.6 for almost a year, now it\'s suddenly dropped a point. Since I am told that after 50 votes over-low and over-high votes are filtered this suggests to me that someone must have been making quite an effort to snipe it down.
I\'ve read alot of posts about sniping and although I\'ve experienced it many times before, and agree with the points being made, this time I\'m starting to feel differently about it all. I\'m begining to wonder why we/I put up with it, and whether or not I actually want to be part of it all. I post my work, as I imagine most of us do, because I love figure painting and want to share work with people and enjoy the work of others. I\'m also curious as to how my work compares with that of my peers. Therefore although I find the concept of voting on peoples\' artwork rather strange, and the criterea people apply even stranger, I was happy enough to go along with it to be involved in the \'community\'.
Now however I\'m very seriously considering pulling all my work off this site (rattle out of pram I know, but I\'ve really had enough of this). This isn\'t some random person sniping on the top last 7 days, someone went into my gallery and sniped my top five pieces.
Sniping is bull shit. Play fair.

It happens to me weekly at least, I think it happens to everyone in the top 100+ from time to time, and I agree, when someone goes in and makes an effort to hit your top 5 minis is does suck, big time!

BUT, as you say you\'re curious to compair your minis to others, so just remember everyone is in the same boat, and the relative scores are still applicable to be compaired.

And also remember that voting seem to be getting harsher as well, so a mini that was 9.6 may have been slowly slipping toward 9.5 and of course you can\'t tell.

Whatever you do don\'t take down your minis, rather use it at motivation! If you want a 9.6 go out and paint a 9.7 mini so it will end up 9.6, that was my plan and it seemed to work wonders! :)

Sniping sucks, but don\'t pull your work, please! :) Sniping, no matter how systematic, don\'t affect your intentions of sharing your work. I\'ll bet you get a lot of appreciation from people and that\'s the important thing! I value appreciative and helpful comments a lot more than the ratings and my ranking.

When your scores are in the 9\'s and you have already made a name for yourself, sniping is really kinda irrelevent. Even if you are looking to sell the models on Ebay and use the CMON auction thing, the name Joe Hill is gonna make more of a difference than whether you have a 9.5 or a 9.6.

Sniping isn\'t fair, but in many respects neither is not sharing your talent with those of this community that appreciate it.

Also dont forget that it takes time for the bot to catch up and remove any wayward scores.

I have to admit that I like seeing what other people send along as scores for my stuff but at the same time, it\'s not going to completely kill me if I\'m already way up into the high nines and someone starts to snipe me.

Hell man, you have ascended to the cream of the crop. Right now I\'m trying for an eight, and that keeps me painting and trying but as you said, rattle and pram. Nothing against it, but when you\'re up at the top already, you\'re going to get negative attention sadly.

Hell, my stuff isn\'t even all that great, but I get sniped as well. Watched my stuff drop .8 points yesterday in a matter of a couple of hours and then suddenly it was back up and a few votes were off. I can only assume that it was sniped. Way I look at it, someone wasted their own time to screw with my stuff so it must have been good enough to do so.

I don\'t know how the software deals with the decimal places, but your mini could have been at 9.605 for example (giving 9.6)and dropped enough for the round up to be 9.545 (rounding 9.5), and the drop, despite significant, isn\'t the 0.1 that appears, but 0.06.

If you understand me........???

but certainly don\'t pull your work over this. It\'s far too inspiring!

Complaining about sniping is pointless. I understand the feeling that your mini is being voted down unfairly (we\'ve all had it and it really grates), but why are you so obsessed with your rank and scores? If your minis are in the 9\'s, you\'re already in the top few percent of painters on this site, and I don\'t think a tenth of a point here and there makes any difference. Except, as Yoda would say, in your mind. At any rate you will get probably little sympathy from those of us struggling to get our first 8. I know I sound harsh but I think I have a valid point.

No Such Agency, this isn\'t about me being obsessed with my ranking or scores. I kinda resent that actually, just \'cos I\'ve got some good scores doesn\'t mean I should \'just take it\' anymore than anyone else. I wouldn\'t be that bothered about if it were on the top ten last 7. It\'s about the fact that someone has deliberatly targeted my best work in order to drop my scores. You can say all you like about thick skin, but if you noticed the same happening to your gallery I suggest to you that you would be pretty offendened too. I know I shouldn\'t take it personally but it\'s a little hard not to.

All that aside, thanks for the all responses they\'ve made me feel quite a bit better. Also, lovin\' the Sergeant Apone image NSA! Made me laugh.... Joe

Why are points important? Simply put It feels good to be rocognised in a quantifiable way. It\'s admittedly an ego boost to get a high score. I\'m quite confident in my abilities as an artist but there is something simply FUN about shooting for a high score. It inspires me to do better. A score is kind of like applause, or tipping in a resturant. Neither adds up to alot in and of itself but they are still nice.

I don\'t know if it\'s deliberatly.. 10 a year ago isn\'t a 10 now. I think many people vote 10 only for pieces with the wow! factor. Maybe you have too little freehand, source lighting, flashing lights and hallelujah choirs. ;)

But you\'re one of my absolute favourite painters.. that\'s for sure! Only wish you\'d post more! :D

P
But seriuosly- what about the program that eliminates 10\'s after 50 votes---your piece can only go down if 9\'s are counted n\'est ce pas?

Joe, its nothign to do with your scores at all, but to do with the fact it is you... I know some other well known painters on this site that suffer exactly the same fate, and yes they get angry about it too. But its something a whole lot more personal than your scores. Someone has deemed you worthy enough to try and lower your scores because in their mind you paint too well!

Sniping, it happens to the best of us!

You see, it\'s relatively simple...

Be like me: an average to below average painter, and you never have to worry about people being jealous enough to snipe you!
