Texture on stone

Hi All,

I was wondering what the best way of getting a more 'stony' texture on a miniature I'm working on? It is Waka from GCT studios mounted on a Scibor temple base and there are two stone heads to paint. Currently they look rather smooth and I wanted to get a rougher look to them.

Sorry but no pics at this time, I'm suffering from broken camera syndrome!!

Thanks

Emulsion paint. Mix some fine sand into your basecoat (or buy ready made emulsion paint from a diy home improvement store).

Alternatively, you could rough up the heads with a hobby knife, dremel and sandpaper then paint.

For something very small I often won't go with actual physical texture, instead just paint the thing appropriately to look like stone just as painters might do working on a flat surface - stippling, maybe some spattering, scumbling and/or drybrushing to create irregularities in the colour which you then play with, highlight, glaze shadows etc. and voilà, stone.

For actual texture, simply stippling the paint on with a stiff-bristled brush can give interesting textures that can work. You can try this in one thick layer and multiple thin layers, can give slightly different results. You can stiffen the paint up if it's naturally a bit too fluid, by mixing in some talc, or marble dust if you have it.

For slightly more texture than this I'd suggest using an a slurry of epoxy putty, again stippled on with a stiff brush*. Once it has hardened you can lightly sand or scuff the surface - flattened off stippled texture can often look more like stone than just the basic texture.

*If you want to use this brush again wash it well before the putty cures!
