Hi all,

First ever thread... I've realised I can only get so much out of looking and am now up to the asking stage of miniature painting. I have recently started work on a SM Chaplain for a friend, and after viewing a few threads already, am after some advice on NMM / metallic looking black.

I have followed some steps that Willdorling outlined in one of his threads;

- 80:20 Chaos black: Codex grey base coat, then adding codex grey to lighten (about four successive layers)
- regal blue glaze to mid tones to soften the grey glare

am now trying to figure out what to do next, should I jump straight into the hard edges and spot highlights? and if so, codex grey or a bluer, shadow grey?

have included a pic, I hope the size works out.

cc's welcome

cheers.

Hi Tenebrius!

Great to see you having a crack at this mini, one of my favourites and I amy come back and repaint it again as last time I did it I was using almost undillute paint lol. I've answered your question over in my WIP and also called for you to start one of your own which you already did DOH! Welcome to the forum, very excited to see the progress on this one.

Take my next steps carefully as some of the mixtures if you go too thick will ruin the transitions. Patience is the key. A good tip is if any layers start too look too sudden you can correct by glazing the basecolour back in. You'll need to come back with the blue glaze but its definitely rescuable!!.

Also don't forget to shade in with pure chaos black to really add the depth. This will make the gorget/top of chest area look really cool.

Good luck
Will

Thanks Will.

I've built up the highlights a bit more and am about to go pure spacewolves grey (kicking myself for forgetting I had a pot). Its looking OK. I may try glazing again as I may have been a bit overkeen to get it all done and now the steps are a bit too stark. My friend (the client) likes the whole comic book highlight builds (ie not neatly blended) so he is bound to be happy with my amateurish attempt at this. I've also started blocking in the other colours.

Thanks again for the tips and advice!
Ten.

Black so far... after bringing up the highlights by mixing in spacewolves grey into the CB/Codex Grey palette, and adding another pure spacewolves highlight. yet to play around again with regal blue glaze and final white point highlights. not super happy with the top of his left thigh, but it doesn't look too bad for tabletop.

cc welcome

cheers

Looking great. Where the highlights are glaze over with dark blues and rework them again, don't jump to the extreme highlights to soon.
Will can instruct you better I reckon :)

Thanks 10 Ball, I'll give it a shot tomorrow. Asurman blue is probably too blue though right? I should stick with Regal mixed with a glaze medium yeah? Maybe add some Chaos black to the mix??

Almost Perftec! Aw, crap.
I like were this is going. Those hard reflections look cool. I have never had the courage to try that.

thanks zab.

i hear what you're saying about trying new things, but every now and then you just have to. sometimes i tell myself its ok cos i can repaint it. sometimes i like to take away that safety net and say i'm not allowed to. deep, i know.

i had a look at your night lords mini from DV. the bleeding sword was a bit of a surprise, but i liked it. goes with the whole vampirish feel of the chapter.

meanwhile, i'll be adding those further blue glazes today. pics to come.

thanks krulebear.

i've re-worked with regal blue glaze over old highlights. re-highlighted with 50:50 codex & spacewolves, moved up through 20:80 codex & spacewolves to pure space wolves. dilute white highlights with added white spot highlights. finally went back and added a bit more watered down chaos black into some of the recesses and around the chest plate.

Looking great T. The transitions look smoother and you have got a nice reflective effect going. The next thing to consider are some little other reflective areas such as on the rh shin, maybe a little light reflection to the side of the main on. If you look at light reflecting on a cylinder you get a couple of bright sections. You can just drop these in where you think they will look cool, no science needed. here is a great example from Tommie to show that http://www.coolminiornot.com/247737?browseid=5068031 Look at the second image down, the shin pad under the sword.

Great job sir!

Thanks Will,

I hear what you are saying and I agree completely about the extra reflective line or two, and if I hadn't fought the tremors in my arm so much to get the current ones looking as they do I might well consider it. I think though, that will be a project for later. Tommie's work is very inspirational and I am a little envious of those who get to go along and get some one on one tutelage from those masters at days like golem.

I have decided to carry on and start blocking in the rest of the colour scheme. He will be HQing along side Belial in a Deathwing army. The scheme already worn by those termies have the green shoulder pad. So I shall keep one of those and make the other one bone coloured to suit. The stormbolter takes its colours from the weaponry that the regular tac marines and ravenwing bikers have in the client's army. Had a little experiment with a white dot reflection on the shoulder pad. Haven't decided whether or not to keep it.

Going with TMM on the rest of the mini for things like the bolter, halo, and other gold trim. Have read some interesting stuff about basing gold with a red paint and then shading them with purple glazes and highlighting up to a silver. Going to give that a try. Will also attempt to shade and highlight up with the TMMs going for a realistic outcome. We'll see how that goes I guess.

Thanks all for the feedback and support. It helps a lot.

Here's a pic of where we are up to... should take some photos in daylight though.

T.

as always, cc's welcome.

Really starting to come together nicely. I completely understand you not wanting to jeapordise the work you have done so far by not pushing too far with extra highlights. The little light spots on the gorget really draw the eye and this mini pops! Good work so far. Can I ask if the bolter, scroll and chest insignia will be getting some white highlights. I think there is room to push the extremes a bit brighter to really add contrast. May just some edging on the bolter etc?

Super work dude.

Thanks Will.

In answer to your question, yes. I've only put down the first couple of layers on those areas that will be worked up to an off-white with some hard edge highlights (like the bolter). With work commitments etc, it'll be a couple more days before that gets seen to now. I just wanted to get some more colour on him to see how he would look.

A question to all and any - I've seen WIPS where the painter leaves off starting any other areas on their model until the bit they are working on is complete, leaving the rest of the model in either black or white depending on the undercoat. Are there any real advantages to this? I see the opportunity to get more colour down while waiting for other areas dry.

Personal preference really Ten. Whatever makes you work best. Personally I mix it up. If I have a definitive idea on the colour scheme I go section by section. If I am not sure what colours where then I try to lay some colour down in the same fashion you do.

Heya Will, yeah, I figured as much. It all comes down to personal preference - those questions about brushes, paints, styles etc.

So here we are so far. I think I'm just about done. Need to do some text on the scroll but that's about it. Took a nice photo in the daytime, looks a little better. Need to sort out a proper shooting area though.

Please critique and make any final suggestions. This piece has been quite fun to paint.

Cheers,
T.

Really nice work sir! Armour is a great attempt and the black comes thorugh nicely with a bit of shine to it. Very colourful and neat. I would like it if you went all freehand and did some scripture effect on the scroll but that is personal preference.

Some of the blend transitions could less dramatic but you have nailed the lighting. The glint on the green shoulder is a nice touch. All in a solid solid mini Ten. Great job - whats next?
