I was reading an artical on \"real metal\" and really want to try this on my next mini i paint. The only thing is im not too sure what Tamiya Smoke actually is. Ive checked my local store for it and it was out of stock.

Can someone please explain what this stuff is and if there is a GW or Vallejo alternative.

Thanks???

Most probably the same as Vallejo. It is a wondrous thing when used properly! I like usign it to tint my NMM as I did on the base of my Knight of Balance. Makes awersome weathering or rust looks. I think you can also thin it and use it for shading etc on many colors. It is worth getting a bottle and playing with IMO.

Tamiya smoke is one of their acrylics, but is not water based, you have to keep some thinner around. It\'s kind of a light brown ink that works pretty well. I like Vallejo\'s smoke just about as well if you thin it a little bit. Handy for shading and making things look a little grungy!

Tamiya smoke is one of their clear acrylic paints. Its a sort of, well, smokey colour  that is used on real metallics (or in the case you quoted bare metal) to give it more depth.

Its not exactly like an ink, it\'s really odd to try and describe it really, but it\'s a very smooth transparent colour, you can dilute it with water and it\'s quite shiny. Jakob Nielson uses these clear colours on a lot of his metallic models. Its really foul smelling stuff though, but I\'ve used some of the other clear colours and am getting some nice results with them.

Vallejo does a colour called smoke which is also very versatile, but they are not at all similar in consistency.
