Taking the next step...

I added pictures to this web site just for posting in this post, but ironically, I didn't realize people would be able to vote on them. Oh well.

Anyway, here we go... An "in progress" Terminator and a commissioned necron lord which I did in 3.5 hours since they were only willing to pay $15 to get him painted.

I gave you a WIP so you can see the basics of how I paint, and I gave you a finished piece (albeit one I did relatively quickly) so you can see how I approach that side.

What recommendations do you guys have for moving on in my progression. These are the first, and 8th model respectively following a 15 year break where I was considered pretty good in the early 90s, but painting has progressed more than you would think.

The staff head was challenging for me because I knew what I wanted to do with it, and I got the lighting right, I think - but the execution of the small scale blending was nightmare-ish. Which will be necessary if I ever want to give NMM a shot.

I really don't like "dark lining" - I am not very good at very thin, straight lines. So any advice (say for painting the next Space wolf terminator) would be appreciated.

The necron suffers from inconsistent paint - the new paints, especially the metallics are hard to thin without them getting a little funky. I tried the Lamian Medium instead of water for the silver and it ended up making it more ... "gloopy" than thin. Anyway, observations that relate to paint consistency are welcomed, but I am aware that there are issues there and that's just going to take practice.

All in all, I am apparently the worst painter on Cool Mini or Not according to the ratings lol - so advice on getting to the point where I am not, would be awesome :)

Hey dude, welcome. Do you have specific goals painting-wise? There's quite a bit of difference between the general methodology for army painting/tabletop use and display pieces, so some of the advice for the latter really doesn't apply if you only need tabletop quality or slightly better (esp. if you need to paint within a tight timeframe).

You don't get a score until you have enough submissions, each with the requisite number of votes (I think that's still five gallery entries, 50 votes a piece).

Trust me, there's stuff waaaay worse than this in the galleries!

Be sure to have a poke around the archived threads, there is a load of stuff on the site already on nearly any individual topic you might think of - blending, smoother layers, metallics v. NMM, painting quickly. First place to get started is the Sticky Thread of much stickyness.

Thank you for the reply and the direction in terms of archived threads.

I have two goals.

First, I want a very high quality, nice looking table top army or two. So 95% of my painting will be focused in that direction. I have Space Wolves and Dark Eldar to paint.

Second, I have two "show" pieces which I have planned, but those are a ways out. The first will be a grey knight Dreadknight (http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA...80004a_99120107003_DreadKnight360_445x319.jpg) - painted as if part of the Thousand Suns chapter - in one on one combat with a Lone Wolf Space wolf in Terminator armour. This one will be quite the accomplishment for me since I have never done scenic basing and certainly never the painting this will likely require. And even the sculpting will be challenging as the knight will be swinging his sword down on to the shield of the lone wolf who is about a third of his size.

Anyway... :)

That's the plan
