Tahn\'s WIPs [Preparation stage]

I decided tonight that it\'s time that I started on my first WIP. Before I joined here 4 months ago [wow, a third of a year went fast] I wasn\'t that good at painting, but I\'ve tested some things and it\'s coming on well, practice and advice goes down good.

This thread will be about my two GD entries - A Mounted Kroot Knarloc, and Master Shaper.

Here\'s the things I\'m going to be using:

Regular tools, Knarloc, Blister Shaper, Green Stuff, and extra parts.

The Knarloc, and additional parts.

Sorry about the bad quality on this one.

I\'m planning on using a guide on Kompletely Kroot, by Oaka (also a member here) to making a weapon mount kroot knarloc, and a dynamic master shaper. If there\'s any advice you\'d like to give me, or any thing else you might think I\'ll need, tell me.

Thanks, Andy.

Yet again I\'\'ve killed another thread before it\'s even started, either that or there some sort of cons...

Meh. Might look pointless so far, but I don\'t want to ruin this one, I\'m gunna need some advice!

Okay, first off for the Knarloc. There is an article made by a member of Kompletely Kroot who made the Mounted Great Knarloc article. Would Green stuff be good for this, or is there a better brand I could use?

Thanks..

Yerr. I\'m not sure exactly sure where I\'m going to be putting the straps, would it be okay to pencil in some quide lines for when it comes to sculpting?

Was there much in the way of mould lines on the knarloc? im suprised/impressed to see that it looks like a one piece cast apart from the hands/paws/claws thingys

There weren\'t many mould lines on the model. But in the crevices in the model (where the leg meets the body etc) and the underbelly, does have some small rough bits, where I might have to file down, and sculpt back in. I\'m still unsure about where I\'m going to place these straps, would it be okay for me to pencil them in once i\'ve decided? This is just so then I know when I come to sculpting them on.

Its a good idea to have a plan to work to so marking the model up sounds like a good plan.

However as resin is quite soft you will need to use a soft pencil or charcoal.

Personally i would paint the lines where you want the straps as you wont have to worry about damaging the model or having colour bleed through the primer.

i\'d just go straight ahead. it\'s not the end of the world if its a little bit off as you can work it for a while when the putty is still wet. and it\'s not as if you\'ll be using so much putty that it\'ll be expensive to remove a section and sculpt it again. if oyu really do want to plan ahead, i\'d use a pencil. charcoal or paint will probably weaken the join between the putty and the model

If you are going to place the straps approwimately where they are positioned in that article then I wouldn\'t worry about marking it, just use the picture as a guide.

Have you used green stuff before?

I would suggest using either milliput (fine) or magic sculpt or possibly a mix of one of those and green stuff, because that would let you sand and drysculpt the straps after they\'ve set. It\'s very handy especially if you\'re inexperienced with green stuff.

I\'ve used green stuff before, I had a shot at armature sculpting a year ago, which wasn\'t that bad. I\'d be okay with sculpting the straps, maybe. I\'m gunna go with what Ritual said and use some Fine Milliput or Magic Sculpt.

Thanks :D

Edit - I\'m drawing the lines in pencil right now, and I\'ve just realised that I\'m going to have to wash the model to get rid of all the mould release fluids they say they use.. woops. I don\'t exactly have an abraisive cleaner or any thing, would soapy water do?

Well, I\'ve done that. I have a whole load of filing and re-sculpting to do another day before I get any where near converting though. The under belly came a little scraped, and then theres the little usual roughness in deep areas.

I\'ll be going outside to clean that up in a few minutes.

You can use watered down milliput to smooth out rough patches. After it\'s set sand it down with some fine-grit wet and dry paper and you\'ll have a mooth surface. It takes a bit of time but it\'s worth it if it\'s for a competition piece.

Well, just got back from the first phase of taking the rough bits out. I\'m gunna quickly fill in some gaps with green stuff now. I also drilled into the wrists for later. The underbelly is my main concern.

I\'m gunna quickly do this then leave it for a while until I\'ve got some fine milliput. They used to sell some down the road, but the store closed... I\'ll take care of the last imperfections then, and then I should be ready to convert..

Just a quick update. I ordered the last of the parts for the Shaper today, I already have the body (generic shaper). I ordered the Orlock Weapon sprue 1 [has a small melta gun and nice sword], Beastman sprue for the grisly stuff, and the better arms, and an Assault Marien arm sprue so i can use the chainsword power box near the hilt to make the weapon look like a power weapon... I\'m gunna be gaming with these models on rare occasions, but they will be to my best standard.

Some thing that I learned in my Science lessons actually proved handy for once the other day. When I was gathering ideas for tribal markings (not gunna tell you about that idea... yet ;)) I decided to take concepts from the Eldar writing in White Dwarf issues...

See, what I learned was, that if you put cooking oil on usual paper, it turns it into tracing paper - so I used that to trace my sources onto one piece of paper.

Just thought I\'d share that lot with you. :p

Unfortunately, the parts don\'t arrive until this friday round abouts. I wouldn\'t be able to go with my parents, but thats no problem. I\'m hoping to get them when I go to the cinema with my friend that day.

I might also be ordering milliput to sculpt his sword if I dont like this one...
