Taarnak's NEW WIP thread

Hi folks.

Starting a new thread to document my ramblings since I returned to miniatures this year. I have a couple old threads here but they are no longer close to relevant, being from around 2007. I have posted some of these to other boards, and in the interest of getting a wider critique, I am posting them on here too.

I have several projects on the go currently, so there will be lots of pictures in this initial post.

First up, progress on my conversion of the Reaper Bones Minotaur:
Minotaur_Bones_WIP_1a.jpg

Minotaur_Bones_WIP_1b.jpg

Minotaur_Bones_WIP_1c.jpg

Minotaur_Bones_WIP_1d.jpg

Still a little to do on his weapon, and I am thinking of adding a cloth to his shield, but other than that he is pretty much done. I lengthened his torso at least a quarter inch. Then re-sculpted pretty much all of it. Then his head was put on top of his torso and the neck sculpted to add it into the torso. The sword blade was made from plasticard.

Everything white (except the sword) is the original Bones miniature. Green parts are Kneadatite, grey parts are ProCreate. Lots left to do, but I am very happy with him so far.

Original figure for reference.

Next up is the WHFB Ogre conversion that I am working on:
Hrothyogg_WIP_1a.jpg

Hrothyogg_WIP_1b.jpg

Hrothyogg_WIP_1c.jpg

Hrothyogg_WIP_1d.jpg

Intended as an homage to Hrothyogg, the Ogre Captain. There have been a few people posting painting threads with this guy and I got a bit nostalgic. Since I no longer have mine, I thought I would convert him and update him a little more inline with the current Ogre style. And hopefully have him be recognizably based on the old Jes Goodwin Ogre from 1989.

Next, a character that I intend to use in an A Song of Ice and Fire version of Mordheim:

Clegane_ManAtArms_WIP_1a.jpg

One of the Kingdom of Avalon starter set figures from Alchemy. I intend to use him as the leader of a band serving Ser Gregor Clegane. I am converting his weapon to be a large mace, and removing any icons, but other than that I intend to use him untouched.

Still very early WIP. Basically the Yellow is the only thing that isn't just basecoat right now.

I've done a bit more on this fellow, but I haven't had a chance to take pictures yet.

Mantic Enforcer proof of concept:
Enforcer_WIP_1a.jpg

Enforcer_WIP_1b.jpg

Enforcer_WIP_1c.jpg

I really love the design of these figures but when I got mine in hand, there were a few things that bugged me about them. First is the knees, but that I will be sorting out with putty as I go. Next was the lack of kit. I understand they are super soldier types and all, but the thinness of the mini and the lack of any equipment outside their weapons puts me off a bit. So, I dug out some GW bits and placed them just to get an idea how it might look with more equipment. I love it so far. I may change one or two of the bits around the waist, but I think other than that, this is how my Enforcers will be modelled.

Lastly for now, a WIP sculpt of the Marvel Comics character Hyperion:
Hyperion_WIP_C1.jpg

Hyperion_WIP_C3.jpg

Hyperion_WIP_C2.jpg

He is sculpted in URO (orange stuff), Procreate (grey stuff), and Aves Fixit Sculpt (white stuff). I still need to do his face and hands. I'm still getting the hang of those so I am moving a bit slow with them.

I appreciate any and all comments, questions and criticism.

Thank you all for looking.

The mintotaur shield rocks...and the shredded scabbard for the ogre made me laugh. :)

Thanks for the link on Hrothyogg. It led me to the correct White Dwarf where all three of my ogre mini's were shown painted and marketed as ogryns for 40k.

Thank you! It was actually your thread that finally decided me on doing the ogre conversion. And I reference your pictures for the details, so thanks for that too.

Glad that link was useful for you. Ogryn eh? Seems a bit strange for those figures, but it is 40K, so...

Working on the ogre today, so I will hopefully have pictures to put up later this evening or tomorrow.

Thanks for looking.

I'm itching to get him finished and put some paint on him.

As always, comments and critique appreciated.

Thanks for looking.

Coming along nice. I like the arched eye on the moon emblem. I vote for adding the serrated blade to the helmet for the full homage :act-up:

Thanks KB. :) He will definitely have the serrated blade. I've some more work done on him but no new pictures yet. Soon though.

I have a new update (and more Hobby ADD to display...)

I was not real excited to see the sculpts of the Mantic Werewolf from their Kickstarter. It was done well enough, but the posing put me off and some of the details were a bit wonky in my opinion.

So, I decided to see what I could do with the idea.

Here is about 5 hours work on the figure so far:
Werewolf_WIP_1a_zps7c13300d.jpg

Werewolf_WIP_1c_zps3079baa1.jpg

Werewolf_WIP_1e_zps5c76fbe8.jpg

Werewolf_WIP_1f_zps031cacbc.jpg

Pretty happy with the pose so far. I think it has the right kind of movement to it. Still lots to do: more smoothing of the anatomy, adding the head, adding fur, finishing off the hands and feet.

Would love to hear some thoughts on the progress so far.

Thanks everyone for looking.

That werewolf is looking superb! Really good work.

Thank you sir! And thanks for dropping a comment, I appreciate it.

Edit:
Does anyone know how to change the thread title? Usually changing the title of the first post does it, but that doesn't seem to be working here.

Updates and new WIPs:

Ogre:
Ogre_WIP_z1_zps28eae786.jpg

Ogre_WIP_z2_zps4baaf5c7.jpg

Ogre_WIP_z3_zps52d793f7.jpg

These next few will be for =I=munda/Inq28 or most likely In the Emperor's Name warbands. I was reading back through all of the awesome Inq28 blogs that I have subscribed, and was inspired to start these figures.

Death Guard:
DeathGuard_WIP_1c_zps88d710f0.jpg

DeathGuard_WIP_1b_zps6d5ada5f.jpg

DeathGuard_WIP_1a_zpsfef96d98.jpg

Lots left to do. He is supposed to look like he is wearing corrupted Mk.IV Power Armor.

Nurgle Sorceror:
Sorceror_WIP_1a_zps4a4cb284.jpg

Sorceror_WIP_1b_zpseb6ed9ce.jpg

This guy will more than likely be used for Mordheim instead. Still not sure though.

Soldier:

Soldier_WIP_1c_zpsbac3e087.jpg

Soldier_WIP_1b_zpsfb11f89a.jpg

Will be a member of an Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor's warband. A few touch ups left to do on him, but he is 99% finished.

As always, comments and criticism appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Loving the Death Guard! Manreaper or big honking chainsword in the left hand?

Soldier; The mechanical arm looks great but the natural one doesn't. You looked too have added an extra elbow or his arm is growing out of his rib cage. I think that a quick re sculpt of the bicep and Bob's your uncle, whatever that means :smile-big: Idea, think that you could cut the bolter in half, the long ways (down the barrel) shaving a faction of a milometer, then glue it back together, reattaching/reworking the barrel, giving the weapon a longer, more 'human' sized profile but still looking like a bolter. Oh, and maybe a stock? Just a though. Keep up the good works!

Like the nurgle sorcerer and the soldier. I agree with mudduck on him though. It looks like his upper arm bone is bent, but may be the angle of the shot. Maybe post a view from his left side.

For the thread title just let the moderators know what you'd like it changed to. I know dragonsreach has changed a few for people recently.

And the ogre is coming along well ( maybe make the crest taller would be more in touch with the over the top current ogre sculpts though) . Glad to see updates from you :)

Thanks!

Plague sword for the big guy. ;)

The Soldier is hella difficult to photo with my phone, so I think that is playing against me here. I definitely see what you two are talking about in the second picture above. I've shot another rear angle picture of him that shows a little better that the arm is anatomically fine. I will shoot new pics tomorrow after I have primed him too.

I wanted to keep the bolter Space Marine sized and without a stock to emphasize this guys physical strength. He is intended to be a gene-bulked ganger turned guardsman turned gun for hire. And a bit of a show off, I think. There actually was a stock on the original model that I removed (which is why the work was done on that arm).

Thanks KB.

New shot for the Soldier below. Tell me what you think after that.

One of the mods sorted me, but thanks for the heads-up. I appreciate it.

The crest on the Ogre is really just the base for me to build the real deal on so it will end up a lot bigger. :)

I like it all. The minotaur is probably my favorite. You really gave it a nice greek feeling with the shield. As for the hands thing, Freakinacage posted a helpful link not to long ago here: http://www.coolminiornot.com/forums/showthread.php?52215-Need-a-hand

Keep it coming!
Thanks Moetle!

Making the Minotaure more Greek was definitely the primary motivation, so I'm glad that I succeeded at least a bit.

Thanks for the link, I will definitely check it out.

New pictures:
Here is a shot of the Death Guard with all of his parts blu-tacked on next to a Cadian for scale:
DeathGuard_WIP_2a_zps6be7193b.jpg

DeathGuard_WIP_2b_zps71c5c613.jpg

And because some folks requested it here is a back shot of the Soldier:
Soldier_WIP_1e_zps04ddedad.jpg

This one is a total pain to photo with my phone. I'll try to get shots tomorrow after he is primed.

Thanks again everyone for looking.

Here is a requested size comparison for the Soldier figure:
Soldier_SizeComparison_zps71ae6587.jpg

He is a big boy, but not too much taller than the Cadian if it were more upright in its stance.

PredatorKroot that I have been working on:
KrootPredator_WIP1c_zpsaa64c8de.jpg

KrootPredator_WIP1e_zps4003bba2.jpg

KrootPredator_WIP1d_zps830315ce.jpg

Without the extra equipment blu-tacked to him. I'm trying to make his armor look Tau influenced, but not necessarily directly Tau manufactured.

With some extra gear:
KrootPredator_WIP1a_zpsf785a5d2.jpg

KrootPredator_WIP1b_zps49f8fddb.jpg

Still very early stages and changes will probably occur. I'm considering putting a modified Fire Warrior shoulder pad on his right arm. Might be too much though. He will be getting a lot more sculpted armor, and the helmet will be modified to have the quills coming out of the back of it at least. I'm also contemplating doing an un-helmeted head for him.

He will be part of a Radical Ordo Xenos warband that I am working up ideas for and he will be the adversary for my Predator inspired Guard Kill Team, which will be getting extensively reworked in the coming days.

What do you think? As always, comments, questions, and criticism welcome.

Thanks for looking.

Updates on various figures:
Kroot:
KrootPredator_Current_1a_zps1fcaba30.jpg

He is meant to look like he is wheeling to confront something. I think it comes across much better when the other arm and head are on. I've also added a bit of height to him.

Soldier PIP:
Soldier_PIP_1a_zpse20aae3f.jpg

Soldier_PIP_1b_zps6437dbeb.jpg

He most likely will get stripped and started over. I tried to do the Zenithal primering method on him and some of the white coat was a bit grainy. You can see it in the leather areas but not so much the others, so I am going to finish those areas a bit more and see if I can disguise it. If not, into the stripper he goes...

Minotaur:
Minotaur_Current_1a_zps7bf70f8e.jpg

Minotaur_Current_1b_zps34967682.jpg

I decided to go with the more hair advice that I got. Nice big mohawk! The three pony-tail-things will be braids when I am finished. I also smoothed out the transitions between his muscles a bit and added his tail back.

Werewolf:
Werewolf_Current_zps16518411.jpg

Thanks everyone for looking.
