Stripping GW paint and GW primer

After raiding the mini box back at my folk\'s place I found some nice old minis that were partially painted and one which just had received a really, really thick coat of primer. Now I want to strip the colors and primer. Anyone has some good suggestions on what to use?

Sure.

If it\'s a metal mini use acetone 100% and a toothbrush... some patience needed. (If it\'s warm acetone it\'s better).

If it\'s a plastic model just use a WARM acetone and alcohol mix. (50% acetone // 50% alcohol)

NOTe: Both components are FLAMMABLE, so be sure you do not expose to flame none of them, it\'s easier and less dangerous to warm them in a water bath.

pinesol! soak for a day, then scrub w toothbrush. any paint left over use a needle and pick out of the crevices.

probably safter than acetone, wont catch fire!lol

I use Nitromors on metal figures and windscreen washer fluid (alcohol basically) on plastic figures.

No mater what you use as a solvent

you will need an old tooth brush, a tooth pick for the really tight places, and several cuss words handy. This will get you through the really hard part of de-painting.

Brake fluid seems to work the best for stripping metal miniatures. Just soak overnight then rinse. Plastics: acetone or alcohol.

Isn\'t it funny that everyone mentions an OLD toothbrush? Like someone would consider using their current one for the project...lollol

Another great suggestion is to buy one of the battery operated electric toothbrushes (4-5 bucks). They really do some major cleaning.....

Plus....NEW toothbrushes can be bought for less than a buck at most discount stores!!

That\'s where I have been going wrong....:duh:

I wondered what lay behind my psychadelic teeth and the fresh minty smell of my minis:D

Even cheaper than Nitormors and less ecologically harmful is good old Dettol. Ok it makes the house smell like a hospital, but it works.
I\'ve just got the Aragorn Figure stripped (that was painted in Oils) and the Ysis I missed the moulding lines on, as well as a Solar Mecharius and an almost clothed Dark Eldar female. (The one that looks like Jordan but the Mini has a Higher IQ).

I (meaning my wife, as she\'s become quite an expert on stripping (just don\'t go any further with that thought)) have found that leaving figures immersed overnight and then a scrub with the old toothbrush works. Doesn\'t harm the plastic bases either and as for brand new mini\'s cleans up the metal real shiny like.

I\'ll give Dettol a try too, cheers. I take it that Dettol is safe for plastic miniatures too (that\'s the biggest drawback with Nitromors).

Cheers - Rab.

Yes works a little slower and you may have to pick at the really tough stuff but it works.

Simple Green

Soak the mini in simple green for 8 hours. The paint will just slough off, and SG is non-toxic and biodegradable.

How long do you soak plastics in windscreen wiper fluid???

I usually leave them in overnight and then give them a good scrub with a toothbrush the next day.

Be aware though that alcohol/washer fluid really only works with acrylics. Enamels, oils, most laquers etc are unaffected as are a lot of varnishes.

Cool, thanks Rab,
I\'ve now got 2 ex-Dragon Prince horses soaking in wiper fluid and 2 more soaking in dettol.
Should be good to see how they turn out.
:D
