Striated skin technique?

There\'s a technique for painting skin where, at the end, it looks very ropey - almost striped.

Does anyone know what I\'m talking about?

Does anyone have any advice on achieving this look or (even better) know of any tutorials?

I know I haven\'t explained it the best I can - I\'ll try to find a picture example.

someone did a Bloodthirster a while ago like that (If that\'s what you mean) Do a search for it - I forget who it was :/

i used the same technique on a lotr troll, to build up the paint strokes to make it look like the troll had very wrinkley skin

If you mean like elephant hide, I\'d use a combination of scraping with knives, scribes and a wire brush. While maintaining direction of the striations, keep a bit of randomness to them. If they are too neat, they come out looking like courderoy.

no :p lol
I didn\'t mean bloodthirster then...

I meant the smaller ones with the big swords...

Any thoughts on how to achieve that effect effectively?

Paint dark base. Paint lighter stripes. Highlight lighter stripes in a few layers, carefully keeping to the light lines.

Here\'s one of my favourite versions by Mousekiller.

well given that the bloodletter above is mine I\'d be happy to explain how I did the flesh...

Wood grain! I treated it like wood grain... I believe there\'s a good couple of tutorials on here for it.

As for the bloodletters flesh in particular, I used a chaos black undercoat, featherblended to bestial through scorched brown, then blended the striations up through scab red, red gore and a little skull white (I know it\'s red flesh but I wanted it to feel cold still). I tidied it up with a little of the black and brown and volia. The thing I\'ll take away from this project is that the striations work better on some parts of the body than others. I should have made it less obvious on the hands than the forearms for example. Aah well, you live and learn.

This little fella was so much fun to paint and convert ) Noone ever notices that he doesn\'t have a cone head anymore!

All the best, pm me if i can help at all,

lol first time I had to seriously think about sculpting a throat. Turns out I didn\'t learn anything - doing one again last night, my 52mm dark eldar warrior looks more like a bullfrog now...that\'s why God invented dremel tools though right?
