Strategies for Scenario 01

Last night I played scenario 01 for the first time. Needless to say we got the first 3 tokens before wiping almost all of the survivors except for Josh. His slippery movement only delayed the inevitable another 4 or 5 rounds or so. Any one have any suggestions or strategies to help with this scenario. Biggest problem being that so many zombies spawned and we just couldn't kill them all fast enough. Amy and Josh both had a chainsaw at one time or another but it didn't do much good against the horde that was after them.

What strategies or tips can you give to people that you have found have worked for you?

Open building as early as possible (ideally whilst still in blue).

We tried this. unfortunately each room had at least 1 or two zombies in each of the first two buildings we went into. that's what created the horde as we tried to run in and out without killing many.

How many players/survivors?

You really need to be fielding 6 survivors, so be playing with 2, 3, or 6 players (unless you house-rule that you always field 6 survivors).

And are you using the extra zombies and spawn cards from the abomination pack?

Nope we just got the standard one. Didn't get in in time for the abomination pack. I played 4 survivors.

Yeah, I played this 7 times on Sunday on my own (I was determined to beat it, but never did), with only the 4 survivors(changed them up a couple of times), it was too difficult to split up into 2 groups, as the groups would get overwhelmed, and there was not enough ability to kill enough zombies while still searching for the objectives.
I want to try it again sometime, but I'm going to have a go at some of the other scenarios first.

Just an idea...

I'm thinking that this scenario should be modified to have 2 less spawn points. Mostly because there are so many buildings and not to mention 1 extremely large building in the top of the map. It would help bring down the zombie hoards just enough that I think it would increase the amount of success by survivors by a significant amount but not so much that it would be too easy.

It doesn't really need nerfing imho. It's a tough scenario and I wouldn't bring any less than 6 survivors, but it's doable.

If you want to tone it down and don't feel like losing at the time you play it, I guess you could remove a spawn. Or you could just pick an easier scenario!

EDIT : if you meant removing spawns when playing with 4 survivors, then I completely agree with you. I can't see how this scenario is possible with just 4 survivors.

Yeah i meant with 4 survivors. Then add an additional spawn with 5 amd all 4 spawns with 6.

We played it last night for the first time with 3 players (6 survivors). We only lost one survivor due to an unfortunate activation card during the spawn phase, one of my guys turned into a feeding frenzy. The strategy we used was to go around and open the biggest building doors first, and clear out the zombies. You really need the six players because you carefully divide up the XP so everyone is just about to pop levels at the same time. We only had one building that wasn't opened when we popped to blue. After some cleanup, we grabbed the tokens, and got the heck out of dodge.

We used similar strategies and managed a victory. Opened doors while in blue, letting the zombies come to us so that we could slowly kill them at the open door as they shambled along. Traded off which Survivor was responsible for clearing rooms/roads to try to keep all Survivors near the same XP/Danger level. Utilized LoS and noise rules to help Objective Grabbers to a) stay out of zombie sight and b) be quiet to make that job easier.

Even getting out after we had all of the tokens was tough. We used 6 Survivors and only managed to get 2 of them out - Wanda (unscathed) and El Cholo with 1 Wound. Everyone else (Nick, Ned, Doug, Amy) became Zombie-Chow.

We didn't grab the tokens until right near the end, and we really didn't have too much trouble. Had I been playing Doug a bit more cautiously, he wouldn't have become zombie-food. But we kept a balance of culling the heards (thank you Mr Chainsaw, for your wonderful service in creating a most horrific bloodbath in a room) so we didn't run out of minis, and getting everything ready to get out alive. Right near the end, the board was starting to populate fast with bigger zombies, but that was as we all retreated into the last road. We got lucky that the spawn point by the exit was 2nd-to-last for spawning, and didn't get an activation on it while we were getting to the exit. My advice? Two crazed chainsaw-wielding jerks, and a big pile of zombie guts.
