Space Wolves don't follow the regular Space Marine organisation rules (there are fluff reasons for this). Wolf Guard hand picked by a Wolf Lord and either accompany him into battle or provide their battle expertise to another pack. Apothocaries don't exist, however Wolf Priests fulfil that role in addition to that of a Chaplin. One Grey Hunter in an army can carry the Great Company banner, it's basically an honor for that whole pack and also generally mean that the banner has more marines protecting it. As for champions - well all Space Wolves are shiney mortal heroes - why do they need to pick one :D

Just re-reading your question though - if your army is being led by a Wolf Lord then I would personally have a pack of 5 Wolf Guard to go with them. If it is only led by a Wolf Guard Battle Leader (as my army does) then I use 3 Wolf Guard.

The way my buddy Tim plays it is that he makes every pack self-sufficient, and then makes sure his characters are available for any special needs that might develop.

I wouldn't start by buying an HQ choice and then determining his bodyguard. I would start with developing your troops choices, then elites, fast attack, etc., and then figure out which packs could have their mission functions enhanced by the characters. This approach allows you to make the most use of the "buffing" nature of SW characters, and also guides you towards giving them appropriate sagas, wargear and so on.

You should really post a list when you get some of this figured out; it'd help you to get more specific feedback, and I would like to see this new army from a new POV.

It's up to you how you do it.

Each Great Company has one Wolf Lord, who has a retinue of Wolf Guard. Some of these Wolf Guard are more capable than others (i.e. the 70pt ones - Wolf Guard Battle Leaders) and thus can lead a portion of the Great Company in battle. The others are still highly competent and have access to a wide range of equipment (i.e. the 18pt ones).

Wolf Guard Battle Leaders are HQ Choices, so you're quite limited on how many you can have (i.e. 4 using a standard force organisation chart). Regular Wolf Guard are an Elite Choice, but come in packs of up to 10.

What size army are you planning on fielding? As Evil Tendancies said having some indication of what your army composition is likely to be would give allow us to provide some more specific information.

Yes, buying a pack of Wolf Guard, kitting them out with all sorts of stuff and the attaching a Wolf Lord to them is definitely one way of making a powerful unit.

It needs to explicitly said, though, that there is no bespoke bodyguard for a Wolf Lord like there is in strict codex chapters. Such a rigid structure does not work with the SW mentality of battle.

A Wolf Lord's bodyguard can be any unit that he, as an independent character, is interested in, and capable of, joining. A pack of Wolf Guard, as you point out above, can function as his guard, but it is not always what you want to do. In some cases, it might be very efficacious to put him with Long Fangs (Grimnar can make them relentless, for example), or with a unit of Bloodclaws.

well so far i bought 3 boxes of 10 space wolve 1 dreadnought 1 rhino/or predator and i have converted the masters of space marine 4 man box to wolves.i allso have the lucas the trickster model and im converting the jag kann and ultra marine carious model.sorry for wrong spelling but i have problems with space marine names.im allso converting a rockfist and stormcaller model with greenstuff.
so i figured id have..........
1 dreanknought

1 wolfguard pack

2 units of grey hunters

i will use the masters 4 man box +kann+ultra marine model as a 6 man wolfguard pack(they would be my hq bodyguard squad).

HQ 1 stormcaller

HQ 1 rockfist

HQ 1 (building a sculpt of a russ type figure or like the picture in codex page39 wolflord)

1 rhino/predator with swapable part so i can use it either way.

and then i would like a landraider.oh and i have enough loose minis laying around that i could make a 10 man jumppack squad or i could convert tham to look like ablood claw unit.

i allso have 5 man heavy weapon box forgot about that.
so what do you think?i was thinking about buying goglin wolf rider box to make some fenrisian wolves.

any feedback would be great.

That looks like a good setup. Grey hunters can hold objectives, wolf guard can go cause some hurt, and you got some backup with Njall, a dred, and a Predator. Depending on how you equip them, you'll do good with this.

I would ABSOLUTELY make some long fangs if you could. Those old guys are awesome in a way that devastators just aren't.

You listed Arjac Rockfist as one of your HQ choices - he is actually an upgrade for a wolfguard pack, not an HQ choice. He is a good candidate for breaking him away from that pack and putting him in with some bloodclaws.
